Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon Review (DrCatfish™)
In its current status, no. Let it cook a little longer.
I'll preface this by saying I wasn't expecting a carbon copy of Skyrim. I didn't want that, I don't expect that. At the same time, its one of the easiest titles to draw direct comparisons to that everyone can likely correlate. As clunky as this game was (and the fact I don't recommend it,) I can see myself enjoying this more than Skyrim quite easily.
I like the other Tainted Grail title a lot, so I thought this would be cool considering its still in the same universe and what not.
I get that it's early access and developed by an indie team but holy, she needs more time in the oven.
Combat is... Yikes. And considering this is a skyrim-esque combat heavy game, that's a big problem. Weapons feel totally weightless and it's all around difficult to fight effectively. Perhaps it's because I decided to play on Hard, but even blocking attacks with a whole ass shield makes me take damage. Not a little bit either, a considerable amount.
Add to this the fact that the hitbox/range of enemy attacks is wildly inconsistent. You can be totally out of range and still receive the damage.
This is all on top of numerous other issues I will summarize point form below:
- Lacking good music. Coming from the other title, I was expecting much better sound design :<
- Performance is yikes. 3080, 32gb of DDR5 and an I7 12th gen and it was stressed to its limits, still stuttering heavily at parts and struggling to load saves quickly.
- Animations are hit or miss, often missing more often than hitting.
- Game chugs hard on load. Load times are around 30 seconds to a minute with most of the time being locked in a sort of semi-loaded screen. The game is running in the background, your character is moving, but your visuals are stuck on a static screen. In a game as punishing as it is (especially on hard) this is quite the annoyance.
Things I liked, however:
- Very nice visuals, when they aren't moving. The environment is really neat.
- Skill system seems alright, didn't get very far with it though unfortunately. Can see a lot of potential.
- Story was interesting and all the components left me wanting more.
- Environments being filled with random shit I can pickup and take/look at/use is really cool. Makes things feel more alive and indepth when I can take every single cup inside a castle.
- Focus on a more involved combat system (parrying, dodging) is nice compared to Skyrim's spam left click to win. Right now the system is clunky but will likely improve (hopefilly).
- Skyrim-esque "do it to level it" system seems cool. Jumping and sprinting are skills, reminiscent of Valheim.
What I will say though, is that there's potential here if a lot of things get tweaked/fixed/reworked. Will it happen? Maybe, who knows. This is the dev's second title and its much more ambitious than their first. I definitely liked the atmosphere and the story intrigued me heavily.
Maybe I'll buy it again in the future once it's more polished but unfortunately it's refund time for me.
