Surviving Mars: Below and Beyond Review (Tryptic)
This expansion is terrible. In my first game, I got the absolute best experience possible for exploring asteroids: I happened to play as China which gives access to the special RC Commander with 6 Large Solar Panels strapped to its back, AND I got the breakthrough tech early on that removes the time limit on asteroids.
It was still terrible. Imagine you are playing a game of Sim City, but at the same time you have a second map. On that second map, you can give orders to a rover to have it collect resources from a small area. The rover moves so slowly that it takes 10+ minutes to collect said resources, then you have to remember to tab back and tell it to collect from the next area. After you have tabbed away from your Sim City game 3-5 times, you discover that your lander only has storage space to carry 1/3 of the resources back. So you turn on the automatic loading option, but 15 minutes later you realize it hasn't come home. It turns out automatic loading is broken and will never send the ship back.
So you buy a second lander from Earth, wait 5 minutes for it to arrive, load it up at your Sim City, wait another 5 minutes for it to get to your second map, and tell it to land. You tab back to your City and forget about it for a moment.
When you return to your second map, you find that your second lander has automatically stolen all of the rocket fuel from your first lander and placed it in its storage. This is its default setting upon landing. You cannot change the default setting. You will have to disable this behavior every time you land more than one rocket on an asteroid. Most asteroids will take 3 trips minimum to recover your loot and equipment.
This was my experience. Yours will be worse: in your game, unless you get the random breakthrough tech I did, the asteroid will leave after 30 minutes and destroy everything you left on it.
This is the fun half of the DLC. The other half involves exploring a large map with permanent shroud (the map returns to black everywhere that you do not CURRENTLY have a unit) and rockslides which leave your units trapped in places where you will not be able to free them for over an hour.
