Summum Aeterna Review (Milkshakes)
Not quite as good as it's predecessor, but still fun. Way more fun than I thought it would be, but still don't recommend it.
Fairly straight forward rogue lite. Gameplay loop is simple and rewarding. It's a heavy rogue-lite, lot's of progression, and didn't waste my time. Maps are really basic and appear to be randomized. You are able to fast travel from the start to any major room, so the game is quick and convenient to explore. The game is really transparent with you, showing all enemies, chests, and items on the map, which makes it really quick to explore. The controls are tight, just like the previous game, with very few instances where I feel the game doesn't respond the way I expect, which is impressive. I play a lot of platformers and that's often a problem.
Overall, it's a good game, but I just can't recommend it. I don't really get what the point is. I beat the game relatively quickly, then beat it again the next run, and that's it. There is not really much going on. I feel like this game needs some end game reason, like Hades. In Hades, there was a reason to keep playing. You unlocked story every run, in addition to upgrading and trying harder runs. This game is lacking that. What story there is, is very thin.
The game does a lot of things right. The seed system is great, there is a ton of progression, you can get OP really quick and easily in a run, but the one thing it doesn't do right is give me a reason to keep playing. Typically a good gameplay loop won't be enough to hook me. It's a shame too because I really liked Noctis, so I had high hopes going into this. I guess I'll wait for a sequel to that.
