Summum Aeterna Review (DivineFlyingGeneral)
Hardly perfect, but very enjoyable, a great castlevania-esque game. As of this review its still in early access so some roughness is to be expected, but overall I recommend it.
Pros
-------
* I found this to be a lot of fun. The seed feature adds varying bonuses and penalties to each run, helping you set the difficulty.
* The three different weapon types (sword, scythe, gun) play very differently, and there are enough weapons within each category to allow you to explore all the game mechanics. Some may dislike the fact that progression often means changing weapons mid-run, but you eventually unlock a mode which allows you to pick your starting weapon and stick with it.
* As of this review the developers are still actively working on the game and releasing new content.
* A good bit of nerd humor, not to mention several references to classic anime and other nerd culture things. Yes, with the right seed Lord Freeza will show up and make your life hell.
Cons
-------
* The runs themselves are too short. It feels like as soon as you hit your stride its game over. As of this review there are 4 boss areas, but you can't do more than 3 on a run.
* The game can feel a bit grindy as there are several upgrade trees, each one using a different resource to advance, but I didn't feel as if it truly took away from the fun. Still it might be frustrating for some.
* In the English version there are some translation issues: mainly grammar and a few spelling errors. Some of the mechanic terminology is a bit inconsistent, but none of these issues are such a problem to lead to honest confusion.
Wishlist
----------
* Longer runs, or at least seeds that add additional levels to a run (maybe those exist already, but I haven't bumped into that seed modifier)
* Allow the special map seeds to be combined for higher difficulty and more bonuses.
* A bit more platforming with some different challenges? There are a few platforming puzzles, but after you get the hang of them, the game feels a bit flat. For example, I wish some of the key challenge rooms were vertically oriented to allow for more mid-air combat fun.
* Wall Chicken. Okay, maybe not really wall chicken, but having secrets hidden in the walls has always been a fun treat for me.
