Subnautica Review (giguy2002)

This game has been out for about 5 years now. I saw it and thought it looks a bit strange and not sure how fun it would really be. BIG MISTAKE!!! This was one of the best games I've ever played.

Subnautica is exciting from the opening screen. The expectation is you're supposed to land on a planet but instead your falling out of the sky into an ocean with no land mass in sight and wondering what the hell just happened?
It's not long before you realize you have a little pod as your life-line and not much else an a vast alien world full of water with no land in site. The water is dark, has kelp, coral, caves, and a host of plants and flowers not to mention sharks, other hostile fish, animals and even a killer plants. As you explore you'll be able to search the crashed ship you were ejected from as well as other bits and pieces all over the ocean.
One thing I found all the way through the game even to the end was it's full of surprises and danger. There were actually some really frightening moments especially when played in my office with the lights off. Drifting in the dark black water not knowing what was below, beside or in front of you hundreds of meters down while a variety of sounds and screams from predators echoed all around. What was that? Is that sound getting closer? Where am I going to hide? All good for a nice bump in the heart rate!
Another unsettling and terrifying aspect is some predators are super tough to kill. Your knife will work on smaller creatures and your Prawn exosuit drill on most others but the largest predators can't be killed without herculean effort and a lot of time making you feel helpless and vulnerable. Being aware of your surroundings and using stealth or distraction methods are a must especially when running deep and using the Cyclops.
Crafting is straightforward. You gather resources to build modular buildings under water and unlock new tools as you progress reaching the point you unlock the Seamoth, and later the much larger Cyclops both allowing you to access deeper biomes without being crushed and retrieving higher level resources for better equipment and items. A scanning base was a super help in locating resources so I didn't have to wander the ocean floor although most of the time it was still fun and exciting exploring the multiple biomes/environments each with their own creatures and resources.
When graphics are fully rendered on the highest setting I found them remarkable. Sometimes I would just float and look around at everything comprised of weird animals and flora. Occasionally, I'd get caught daydreaming as something would take a bite of flesh and I'd give a little scream.
Subnautica does a really good job creating a story around the planet and survival. The radio added clues to steer you in the right direction and I never once thought "What is this about or what am I doing here?"
This is a fantastic game for what an open world survival game should be. It’s fun and different from start to end and dang it I still hate those little shark like face biters!!!
I spent over 200 hours playing this game and think I explored just about everything there was to explore. When I finished I actually felt pangs or nervousness, and sadness. With all that I'd been through and everything I built I felt like I left a part of me behind...almost like I should have never finished the game.
