Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical Review (valeran46)
This game is short; about 5 hrs for a full run start to finish. If you love music and/or love mythology, you will likely just binge the game start to finish. It's that amazing for those that love music and/or mythology. If you aren't a fan of either, you likely won't get engrossed into it. I, being a fan of both, simply couldn't stop playing from the time I started until it was finished.
The story is good, even great at times. If you're a detective type, you'll likely figure it out long before you're supposed to, but, I didn't mind. Even I didn't get ALL of it right as I expected one specific turn in the story that never happened, instead it went another direction. The music is the same; at the least good and many times great. There were many times where I just smiled at the choice of how the songs were composed. There are emotional ups and downs. There is comedy in it that, at least once, had me laughing out loud.
Is the game worth the price for such a short run? Yes. I see how the game is replayable, doing at least 3 playthroughs to see the different paths, maybe even more than three given the number of choices you can make. The voice actors did an amazing job, both with the dialogue and with the singing. The artwork is spectacular. So even with such a short experience time-wise, I can see where the price is justifiable. Others may disagree on that point.
This game is not for everyone. It's not even a "game" per se. It's an experience, a story, a musical, with a setting that is unique... and I loved it. But, it is not the usual fare. It is you, the player, directing the choices of a story.
Updated
I've now completed 3 playthroughs and looking forward to the 4th, probably 5th. I'm really blown away with the songs, how many different paths you can take and how that changes the experience. Do not discount the romance options as that gets pretty deep emotionally, or at least I thought so. With 3 playthroughs under my belt, I am still laughing, tearing up, and surprised at the quality the vocal talent brought into this game.
One thing I do want to address that another review brought out; that at times, during a song, you hear a wrong note or a voice crack. Yes, it happens. And that lends SO much credibility that these aren't professional singers. These are voice actors being pushed to sing a dialogue, a conversation, and that crack, that wrong note, makes you believe that it IS these two characters.
I'm easily going to get 20, maybe 25 or 30 hours, or more, out of this game in order to get all the achievements and I'm not going to be bored. Because with 3 playthroughs under my belt, I'm still not bored and finding new things, new songs, new conversation choices in a song, new paths. This game is amazing.
