Stray Blade Review (bryancodex)
The game is extremely mediocre in every thing it does. That the best i can describe it in one sentence. It has many potencial to be higher but it mostly subpar. But if I had to rate it, it still a 7/10 which is a passing grade in my book which is why it a thumbs up. Note that I played this game on the "Farren must die" difficulty so I know this game pretty well since I must midmax and figure out how to beat the game that trying to kill me. Many problems become clear especially when you play on higher difficulty but here a list of pro and con.
Pro:
- The art style is really good! I love the vibrant color and landscape design.
- The land can sometime be gorgeous at times
- There are many cool weapons and cool combos and ult to mix and match
- The game feel fantastic and solid when you unlock "powers" later. It really smooth things out for combat
- Customization is cool, especially how I can paint my armor and look
- Variety of armory with cool design
- Pretty alright combat with decent impact.
- Game got solid excellent execution animation
- The metroidvania part of the game pretty fun and make you want to explore old zone
- Story is ambitious and i can see a lot of work was put into the lore and world
- Map changes as the story progress which is an amazing and innovative idea
Con:
- Art direction is a bit contradictory at time. At time the game quite colorful and wimsicle like Fortnite, but there are scene in the game that are really dark lie bloody bodies scatter everywhere, lacerated, hang on treee, impaled dead corpse, lots of blood. It feel so mix tone especially with the art direction and writing.
- Boji not as interesting as I thought and I hate having to pause the game and talk to him whenever he got something to say, I wish he just said it as I'm moving through the map
- Story is a mediocre and really predicatble. There wasn't much interest in the lore or incentive to learn more from the monster and wild life since they pretty basic "wild beast" that are pretty large monster. Only the human faction lore seem flesh out.
- The Combat can be very annoying with badly time window of attack, delay attack and VERY small parry window that can realyl extend farther. Sometime i feel like parry is not worth it since it stun the enemy for half a sec and I hardly got time to counter hit before they begin the NEXT attack. it probably safer to dodge and hit instead which is dissapointing for parry freaks like me.
- Enemy are extremely inbalance, atleast on hardest difficulty since ESPECIALLY the range enemy can 1 shot you the majority of the game. The archer also CANNOT be parry and often shoot you point blank. Since you can't stagger them fast enough, if you swing at the wrong time, you shoot you point blank and you're dead in one hit.
- Boji and Farren banter is a good attempt but I can see people get annoyed between their.... mediocre banter
- The story drama between boji and farren isn't that great, often time it feel like forced drama.
- The map and idea of metroidvania is cool since you want to return to old area HOWEVER, as the map "changes" as you progress in the story, sometime it changes so drastically that I get lost in where I was, and i'm someone who GOOD at navigation in other video games. It didnt feel balance on how much is change after certain story beat.
- There no better way to "upgrade" a weapon you like and it often get powercreep by some other weapon, like a halberd since it can stun while other "ult" leave you in such a vulnerable state.
- The land design despite being beautiful can sometime be mediocre. generic grass ruin land, generic snow land, generic desert. It the second HALF of the game where the land get a little better.
- Many weapon not well balance since it is unusable in harder difficulty since you are stuck in an animation for too long leading to death.
