Storyteller Review (Big David Energy)

This game is genuinely good and it really pains me to write this but also I just can't recommend it for the sheer lack of playtime. It took me about 90 minutes to finish literally everything this game has to offer and it unfortunately has no replay value. The game itself is really neat, the concept is fun, the puzzles are creative (albeit usually pretty easy), but the ending felt extremely lackluster, as it kind of just tells you "Congrats!" and throws you on your way, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I feel like there could have been some kind of major post-game reward that would have made things feel more fulfilling.
Considering the game's about you telling stories, I feel like it'd make a lot of sense to have some kind of sandbox mode at the end where you could mix and match all of the scenes and characters you've grown to love, and I think that would more than make up for the issue of not having a lot of puzzles. A lot of other people have also brought this up, but workshop support would also allow this game to truly shine, since there's so much more potential for this game but it just falls a little short in my opinion. You can have a little bit of fun experimenting within each level, but it is pretty limited since pretty much every meaningful thing you could do is either a solution to a puzzle or for an achievement, and most levels only have one or two ways to complete an objective, which sucks because it feels like there could be a lot more freedom than that given how the game functions.
One of the main strengths of this game is how every character seems to have their own personality and way that they interact with different set pieces and other characters and I think it'd be really fun to see how different genres of characters would interact with each other. The puzzle with Bernard and the Baron was one of my favorites because it was open-ended, really fun, and showed that characters from different groups can work really well together. Just wish we saw more of that.
There's also a ton more potential in how characters could interact even within the same "world." One potential puzzle I'd really like to see a puzzle where you have to get the Knight and Baron to fall in love with each other, since they're at odds with each other in almost every puzzle they're in, and the latter has a specific characteristic that is required for him to fall in love with someone, so it'd be interesting to see how you'd have to set up the scenes to make it happen. Also, some characters are just extremely underutilized, like Dracula, Mina, and Jon since they literally only show up for one puzzle. It just felt like there was so much more that this game could do, even without adding more characters or scenes, which sucks because what it does have is genuinely really good, I just feel like it needs more to really shine.
As of right now, I would say either wait for this game to go on sale or wait for an update before you buy, but if you don't mind the short playtime and like puzzle games, definitely give it a go. It's a good game that leaves you wanting more, but it leaves you wanting a little TOO much more. Sandbox and/or workshop support would immediately make this game a 9/10 though but right now it's a really good concept with not enough content to justify the price (at least for me).
