Star Overdrive Review (Geom)
First impressions!
(I'll likely edit this once I've got more playtime than this.)
I've had my eye on this one since I saw it announced in a Nintendo Direct, so I was excited to try it. Didn't get to try the demo, and I've hardly played for long, but here are my thoughts.
I can appreciate the character this game is trying to convey. 80s/90s rock aesthetics combined with scifi space exploration sounds like a done deal for me.
The hoverboarding is STUPIDLY fun. It's a bit strange to get the hang of, but once you do (which doesn't take long) you'll find you're breezing through the overworld in record time and doing tricks not just to speed yourself up, but because they're satisfying to do anyway.
One gripe I have is that it feels like the game is missing a degree of polish to it. The foundations are here for a really damn good time but there's little snags that hold it back noticeably. Stiff animations (especially on BIOS), wonky combat and somewhat outdated looking models are the standouts for me at the moment.
I've yet to encounter any puzzles or get properly invested in the game's deeper mechanics, so again, take what I say with a grain of salt. I'll come back to this review later.
