Spin Rhythm XD Review (Truth and Method)
I play music games because I enjoy the flow-state. The combination of tactile control options with SRXD's unique mechanics and aesthetic makes this one of the best for flow-seekers. If you have a Steam Deck, you ought to try this game. When the touchpad sensitivity and haptics are dialed-in, it feels like manipulating an object in space (like a turntable). Even if you don't have a Deck or turntable--even if you don't like other rhythm games--I encourage you to check this out.
The challenge isn't about tapping more buttons faster, the controls are more varied. That also means the maps are significantly more expressive and immersive than most rhythm games. The rotating wheel mechanic (which honestly looked like a stupid gimmick when I first saw it) adds a kinetic aspect to the experience that makes it feel more fully embodied, almost like a dancing game you can do in your seat (which you can actually do if you enable gyro controls). More than any other rhythm game I've played, I feel the map-makers for these songs are choreographing motion and expression to involve players in the music in a way that makes other games feel like simple, masochistic finger exercises. It actually seems like a Ring Fit controller would work with this (which I tried with limited success...maybe someone more determined can make it happen).
This means that SRXD works for music you don't often hear in the masochistic keyboard-tapping games. Smooth R&B, dreamy pop, and even acoustic singer/songwriter fit the format perfectly. Although the official music/maps skew toward stereotypical EDM, the community creations showcase songs in styles that wouldn't work well in other games. I hope the game's developers do more with this potential in their official releases.
I could go on about other stuff I love about this game, but the last essential point for potential players is the overall visual aesthetic. The skins/backgrounds are dynamic, abstract, "futuristic" visualizers that respond to the gameplay, making for a more coherent and engaging multi-sensory experience for the player. This not only enhances flow, but you can play this confidently knowing that no random anime erotica is going to pop up on the screen.
