Spec Ops: The Line Review (Amor Fati)
What a refreshing storyline, from..2012? Damn, you can tell when story-driven fps started going down the drain.
It's hard to compare Spec Ops: The Line to any other game, because from gameplay perspective it's obvious that the game was either primarily developed for a controller or the devs never played fps before in their lives. The controls are awful, like, seriously terrible, i didn't really get used to it after the entire playthrough and you need to modify game files for mouse input because it has acceleration and smoothing enabled with no way to turn them off in-game and the sensitivity is way too high, so you also need to adjust it in the config file, which just might be a symptom of a game getting too old. There's no innovation or cool ideas implemented that would stand out, it's mostly just shooting from the cover until enemies stop coming, occasionaly throwing grenades. You can command your team members to do some actions, like killing an enemy or throwing a stun, but i never really relied upon it, besides having a little fun with it in one chapter.
So, if i were to judge the game only for it's gameplay, i wouldn't recommend it to anyone, scoring somewhere around 3/10. But let's be honest, no one plays Spec Ops: The Line for it's gameplay.
And getting to the meat, the sole thing this game is praised so much for, it's story.
You are Captain Walker, a professional Delta operator, sent to Dubai for some recon, after a natural disaster wiped almost an entire population, commanding a small group of two other operators, you start uncovering some seriously disturbing news about this whole disaster and US government's attempts at saving and extracting survivors. Learning about all of this, it is now apparent that there are still a lot of people here, so being a commander, you adjust your mission's directives, now it is up to you to help save as many as you can.
There will be a lot of decision making, and you may not realize it until it's too late, but i'm sure that such a trifling matter is not a problem for you, after all you've survived Kabul and seen things that people shouldn't see, you'll manage just fine. Just remember, we are the good guys here, not them.
I just have to say one thing to you, look twice, you might be seeing things, the sandstorm is pretty thick out there, so don't forget you goggles.
Now, Gentlemen, Welcome to Dubai. Mission is a go.
