Sonic X Shadow Generations Review (Dabu)

Sonic Generations was one of the first games I have ever played in my entire life
and by far one of my favorites not only from the Sonic franchise, but of all time... that being said, I may be biased, so whatever. I'll be completely honest, I didn't play much of Shadow the Hedgehog from the PS2, but I always found it endearing the connection of the Black Arms and Shadow. AND since Shadow is my second favorite character of the Sonic Universe, this was an absolute treat to me, specially since his last solo game was like what? 19 years ago? I don't know, but all I know is THIS SHIT IS PEAK BABYYY!!!
This review is about the Shadow Generations part of the package. If you're wondering about what I think about Sonic Generations... if it wasn't obvious enough by the first paragraph: it's an amazing game, now go read the rest you lazy bum.
(Just a fair warning, this is my first time making a review of literaly anything, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. Also some spoilers for both the gameplay and the story... play the fucking game NOW.)
I want to start with the story, then I will talk about the gameplay (Skip this if you want to go completely blind, but to sum it all up: it's great). The story is kinda simple, but fun none the less! It's great to see Maria and Gerald again, and the conection to Sonic Generation is neat. They actually made the reason he loses in the original make sense! The building the connection between Black Doom is so awsome, seeing Shadow getting those Venom/Alex Mercer/Spawn upgrades is the coolest and best decision SEGA has made in a good while, and we aren't even at the gameplay part. Now... for the crème de la crème of the whole story for me... seeing Shadow and Maria almost made me tear up, and I'm so happy it did. Every interaction they had was sweat from begining to end, and their final interaction? To quote Officer Earl: "It's enough to make a grown man cry, and that's ok". Overall, they literaly made the best version of Shadow character wise in this game. And Ian Flynn? NEVER STOP COOKING!!! (also, I may be talking nonsense, since I didn't read neither the Archie or IDW comics, so...)
But what about the gameplay? Creamy... CREAMY AS FU-
It's no joke when I say that's the smoothest controls I have ever used in a Sonic game, or plataformer for that matter. It's literaly Generations gameplay, BUT CRANKED UP TO FUCKING 11. I am thankful to whoever is above us all that they didn't make his gameplay Sonic's, but edgier... (cough cough Sonic Forces cough cough). Instead, I think the designers and the programers listened to literaly nothing else other than Bring Me The Horizon, Bullet For My Valentine and Slipknot... because this shit looks straight out of a 2000's Linkin Park album cover. Other than the visuals, sliding on the grind rails, jumping on springs, boosting? Literaly everything great about those things come together in this game. Along with that, the new mechanics adds so much more spice to the game than the normal Sonic gameplay ever could. Don't get me wrong, Sonic's gameplay is good like the og Terminator, but it doesn't come close to the variety and greatness that is Shadow's, just like Terminator: Judgement Day.
- Chaos Control is iconic and everyone knows what it does, so I won't go further. (ZA WARUDO)
- Doom Spears is a treat to juggle along with the other gimmicks, disabling enemies and activating contraptions to open doors and enable extra plataforms. It's Chaos Spear, but more! It's like that one scene in The 300 Spartans.
- Doom Blast is just a Dragon Ball reference. You beat the shit out of specific enemies and send them flying, with Shadow teleporting to wherever he sends them to. Great for speedrunning!
- Doom Surf is the best waterboarding ability I had the evermost pleasure to use it. You literaly only go foward, jump and move from side to side
- Doom Morph (a.k.a SQUID GAMES) is the most "eh..." ability of the bunch. Is basically the middle ground between the web movement from the PS1 Spider-Man game and the PS4 one. Not complete dog water, but it isn't great either. (also as a side note, I've spent one whole afternoon and a bit of my time just trying to figure out how to sling myself. Fuck you, Squidward Tentacles)
- And for this one... play the game. Yea, I'm edging you right now.
Now... did I write everything poorly like a 9 years old toddler would? Yes. But I just wanted to point out that this game is a whole ass experience, and you should definetively try out. If you don't want to play Sonic Generations for some god forsaken reason, wait for the game to become solo or buy when it is on discount.
This game is not only a love letter for Shadow fans, but for the series (2001 - Onwards) as a whole. Thank you SEGA, you made my childhood, and I hope you make others too.
~Dabu
Also, Doom Morph has an asshole. I discovered while I was falling off the map for like a minute. 10/10 gaem.
