Sonic X Shadow Generations Review (지유)

A remaster of Generations was not particularly needed, aside from the awkward way it runs on PC, but it was a fun game with some great music so hearing it was coming back wasn't a bad thing. However, the Shadow half makes this more than worth it. The level design is done in a way that is punishing but fair with a lot of branching path for those with lightning reflexes. The overworld, to me, feels like they jammed all of Frontiers into a Mario 64 Peach's castle and I'm here for it. The new powers are weird... but fun to use and don't feel left behind ever - they all keep getting use beyond their initial reveals so that's really nice. And the music is outstanding, but I mean, obviously. It's Sega, what did you expect?

The story, though, is an absolute joy. Original Generations was serviceable, and once again, Shadow's side brings it to a new level. I don't want to spoil it, but it's very touching and has quickly become a favorite.

The game is pretty short, but what's there is very solid, which is good because while the story might not take a ton of time, the replayability factor is through the roof. There is so much to do for those who want to 100% everything, or for those who are too bad at games for stuff like that, it's still fun to explore and try new challenges. Or even just pop on Doom Mode and hang out in an apocalypse nightmare, you know, whatever!

The controls for the remastered side are still a little on the jankier end. I'm not an expert, but I feel like maybe that wasn't touched up so much. It runs fine, but I found myself getting a little frustrated with some of the movements. Shadow's side has a ton of improvements there, but even then you should expect the occasional surprise you jumped off a cliff ending. Huge improvement from the former, though!

If you are new to the series, this isn't a bad place to start! You get a sampling of the whole series to this point in time, but some of the story might not be as fleshed out as it could. It's tough for me to tell, but I think they have enough there you can follow along. For long time fans, what am I even addressing you for? Get it! It's peak! Seriously!! This might be the best "Sonic" game. I don't know. I'm still processing my experience. But it might be!
