Sniper Elite: Resistance Review (Sped Kelly)
SE: Resistance feels like a SE5 DLC, and that isn't a Bad Thing (mostly).
SE5 was a great game, there were some things I liked from SE4 that didn't make it through so well, but I'll make that a footnote later of Things I Liked about SE4 that got lost going to SE5.
First of all, let's not play pretend, everyone likes cool new guns in a sequel. SE: Resistance delivers in a really cool way that would make Jonathan Ferguson and Ian McCollum (especially) blush with the cool and cruel selection of Nazi-deleting apparel. I was very excited to see the Lebel and Berthier especially as starting weapons given that the game is based around the pre D-Day Free French.
In terms of gameplay, Resistance does nothing different, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. SE5 worked pretty well in terms of gameplay. Were there things I would love from SE4 that should have been adapted? Absolutely! Did they happen? Unfortunately, no. One of the biggest things I really loved about SE4 was that the lighting level helped hide you, so paying attention to shadows and being silhouetted actually mattered. SE5 threw that away and made the visibility system absurdly simple, which made some missions frustrating, where you'd hug dark areas and avoid the light to no avail.
All in all, Resistance feels like a (very expansive) DLC of Sniper Elite 5. There's a lot of new content, and most importantly, Rebellion continues to hit the ball out of the park making absolutely stunning and immersive environments to fight in.
The unfortunate part is that it doesn't iterate or improve on SE5 much. There's a few quality of life changes here and there, but past that, it just feels like you're playing SE5 with a new mission pack.
End verdict: If you want a mission pack for SE5, get it on sale.
If this is your starting point, play Sniper Elite 5 instead.
Vive la revolution, ils ne passeront pas.
