Slime Rancher 2 Review (lamphouse99)
It's decent but has lots of problems.
Good:
-Soundtrack is well composed and sounds excellent
-Map is large and expansive
-System requirements are light, game will run below minimum spec (I have tested personally)
-Game is mostly well polished in terms of UI and graphics with only a few flaws.
Bad:
-Lot's of grinding and resource gathering doesn't always feel consistent
-Some content isn't easy to figure out
-Game is too expensive for what's given, I recommend it only if it's on sale for at least 33% off. I'm likely to remove this as more content is added to make it actually worth $29.99.
-Game is too easy after health upgrades, you'd have to be braindead to die to anything unintentionally even with damage set to maximum
Some suggestions for gameplay:
-More consistent ways of resource gathering, such as drills like in Slime Rancher 1 and make resources area specific, maybe a hybrid approach would work where you'd find resources and a drill would provide a ton of the resource but over time. Or potentially ways to scan for items using the map or a new upgrade.
-More enemies/hazards should be added and a difficulty slider to make the game actually feel like a challenge. Existing Tarr and damage settings could be linked to this.
-Add more consistent guidance throughout the game on how to progress
-Add ability to make waypoints on the map to allow players to mark important areas
-More slimes need to be added. Slimes that are based on elements is an idea I came up with, similar to Pokemon. And also more rare slimes, potentially spawned by scripted events or just extremely low chance or specific situations.
-Less focus on decorations/non-essentials and more on story/gameplay. Not everyone cares for cosmetic features, you already have more than enough especially in the latest versions of the game.
-Add underwater gameplay and more water based features. For a game where a significant portion of the map is water, the Slime Sea isn't much more than a trash can for Tarrs or items you don't need.
Technical things:
-Add higher LOD settings, distance detail is far too low even at max settings and it's obvious.
-Add MSAA back, Slime Rancher 1's 8X MSAA clearly looked better and it's easy to add to this type of game engine and graphics API. Please do not go towards the current trend of bad AA tech and upscaling like TAA, FSR, DLAA etc. which all look terrible.
-Game still stutters even on the strongest of PCs, and even worse on low end systems. Although this has gotten much better since launch.
I've played the Slime Rancher franchise since January or February 2016, not long after the game first came out in early access. I love this franchise so it's hard for me to say bad stuff about it but I don't like the direction some things are going in.
TLDR:
-Game has lots of good aspects but is currently a bad value at full price. Worth getting if on sale.
-Difficulty is not consistent between different aspects of the game.
-Technical aspects like performance and bugs are not major issues.
