Skullgirls: 2nd Encore Review (HDSHT)
IN A WORD: ECLECTIC. Skullgirls, albeit a six button fighter with some extremely intimidating execution, was my introduction to the FG genre. After my 200+ hours on console, I bought the game here on Steam.
I can't describe how much I'm in love with this game. Fun character design and movesets combined with the downright machiavellian level of detail that Lab Zero animated the sprites with. As an amateur digital artist myself, I have nothing but appreciation for the consistent artstyle, beautiful custom shading engine, and healthy serving of comedy and pop-culture nods.
This game is 100% wacky from a catgirl who can fight headless to a cop who has had his iron lung mechanically weaponized into a one-man-band. The feel of training and seeing yourself improve at combos, setplay, and general smarts. Best part is that when you nail the concept and mechanics, Skullgirls prepares you to see those in other fighters. So when I picked up UNIST or BBCF, I wasn't totally lost all over again! I'll write more later.
