Skull Island: Rise of Kong Review (Lewauski_Kapalski)
EXCLAIMER: only recommended if you enjoy fun-bad games!!
What I've found (in my opinion) is the pros vs cons when finishing Rise of Kong..
First what the game did right:
1 The artistic style is great in the characters and themes of Kong, though the map can contain overused textures, the features are quite a beautiful interpretation!
2 An abundance of hilarious camera angles of kong facial features and actions when in cutscenes!
3 Distinct separate bosses, with different species ruling each, on different themed places of the island exploring more than just a 'jungle' setting!
4 Each boss encounter requires a unique tactic to defeat, helping explore Kong's abilities and mechanics
5 You can skip a lot of the 'mini' fights of lots of minions by just ignoring them
6 Save-Loading small enemies de-spawns them allowing for a clean start
Now to the long awaited CONS
1 The price is not at all worth the game. A sale of AT LEAST 50% is the only way to entice a purchase, if money is a concern to you.
2 Insanely easy to get lost with no tracking on your location, although a map is provided, it amounts to 0 help (or at least in my experience). There is no directional guide, the repeated map structure looks exact same most of the time. If you intend to do a full playthrough, know that you'll get lost or at least question yourself that you're lost 80% time. Often the map circles around back to the area you were just in 10 mins ago, impeding a nice linear progression.
3 Smaller based enemies are dropped all over without regard for structure. They respawn whenever you exit an area and enter it again, making it harder to track where you've been.
4 In relation to the combat, it starts out tedious and mundane when tutorial is finished, but you grow into it.
5 Addressing the Introduction is inexcusable for how low budget it is, just some caveman drawings and voice isn't good. To be honest the tutorial with Kong Mom most likely might have been their intended course of action to extend the timer so requesting a refund wasn't an option.
6 The proportions from Kong to environment aren't canonical at all. Expected Kong was supposed to be as big as a mountain but looks about as big as a straw hut in this game. However getting over that is no big deal as its a game made to be low budget.
7 Acquiring skill points and the skill tree is horrendous. The climb and accumulation of abilities isn't thought out well. Finishing the game also doesn't get you near enough points to max stats.
8 Various areas containing obvious flaws, non clean designs and rushed fine tuning i.e. see under levels, far apart walls, and access to invisible walls
9 Almost often a gamble whether you are going to get stuck in an out of bounds area or while climbing to which you can't move
10 If you die or are not manually saving in each new encounter with creatures or crossroads in the map, losing progress can occur. Can reset progress back to start of play sessions if not saving manually. Basically auto-save doesn't help and you can only manual save one session requiring overwriting the same save all the time.
11 Small time enemies are copy and paste all over the map with repeating models used for multiple areas.
12 Platforming in Kong can be incredibly frustrating with textures being hollow and falling to start over, platforming is also a common occurrence used often in each level.
13 Knowing how to Save-Load is NECESSARY in Kong for how much bugs occur that require a restart load. Bugs such as travelling to different level can result in a inoperable character only able to move, climbing up branches to become frozen, phasing stuck in rocks or walls unable to escape and i'm sure more. However they are an easy fix if you Save-Load.
14 The replay ability of Kong is an absolute low. Aside from achievement completion or having a desire to play again, there isn't much else you can do.
Finalising, Kong requires patience and practice in many different fields of development, but can be a very enjoyable fun-bad game!
If you expected anything else from GameMill, that's on you..
