Skautfold: Shrouded in Sanity Review (Jebwihm)

"Shrouded in Sanity" is a great indie title, a true, albeit sometimes rough gem that is earnest, authentic and wholly manages to unfold a unique feel. (It made me buy the three of the five "Skautfold" games in an instant). The top down 2D-combat and atmosphere is right out of Bloodborne/Dark Souls, the dark and gothic setting gets its tone right, the horror and insanity aspects are subtle, but unnerving and it is truly one of the most sincere entries in haggling H.P. Lovecraft inspired themes and tropes (and I got over a lot of media in this genre). A revived caste, corrupted noble blood, elusive eldritch entities, a lingering madness, unsettling lore fragments and unspeakable sacrifices? Whats not to love?
Combatwise it can get a little tricky, but it is not as hard as the franchises where it got its inspiration from. It is also not very complex, for there are only a few stats and no new items or weapons; you get what you start with. The lack of a map is 50/50 for a lot of people, but I personally find it fitting. The last achievements are a little insane and grindy, but you can 100% the whole deal in around 5-8 hours I suppose.
A great title for every fan of the genre and even for a lot more! It really stands out and lingers, if you open yourself up to it!
