Silent Hill Review (Trentin)
"Homecoming was developed with a stronger emphasis on more interactive combat."
This game is hell, If it weren't for me streaming this game with friends I would have turned it off very quickly, theres just so many things wrong with it, ignoring the fact that it's not a good fit for a Silent Hill game.
Crashes - Plenty of them, mostly when I entered or exited the Shepard house, losing approx 40mins to and Hours worth of my time.
Freezes and Slow load times - Especially when saving or entering new areas in later stages of the game, i'm talking a solid minute or more by the end.
Lighting Issues- Pretty minor to be honest, but often characters eyes and teeth would be blacked out
Sound issues - Sound only coming through on ear, badly balanced, or some enemies appearing not to have proper voicelines play.
Lipsync - minor to me but it's bad
Puzzles that potentially softlock your game - The Mask puzzle later can and did ruin one of my save files, thankfully I was warned about this and had backups
Camera glitches - always when interacting with some objects like valves, it's clearly broken but a bit funny
Massive FPS Chugging in the later parts of the game
Guns not working ... like seemingly at all, at least the Chromehammer pistol did nothing for me the entire game
Control Issues - In general the combat in this game sucks, it's dreadful and I hated every second minus one thing which is the silly spin attack move the knife has ... but tonally It doesn't fit at all in this game, it's so stupid.
-Enemies will stunlock you, all the time. This especially goes for bosses
-You're rolls have little or no invincibility frames, so even if you try to roll you'll often get hit
-Enemies attacks and movements are faster than yours, especially Bosses, so even if you try to dodge you'll get hit, this is compounded by the lack of I-frames (Backwards dodging is the safest )
-Hitboxes are fucked, enemies will hit you when you clearly rolled away, and you won't hit enemies when you clearly did
-Horrible hit detection, especially noticable later in the game when enemies stopped staggering, there was no impact sound or animation often, for guns I got no indication they did anything, and i'm sure they didn't do anything - the only indication is sometimes enemies will have weird red marks on them
-Having to lock on to attack is frustrating, I often found myself not having enough time to dodge > reposition > lock on > hit because something knocked me on my ass already, this encapsulates bossfights.
-Bosses have a stupid amount of health, it's never obvious what you have to do, like the Aspyhxia fight were you cant damage her from the from despite looking like so. And her movements don't work well with how your meant to defeat her.
-The best way to beat most enemies is to stunlock them, with something like the knife in my experience, it just saves you the headache .. which if i'm resorting to breaking the game, means it's badly designed.
-Needlers are perhaps the worst enemies in existance, having the ability to block melee and RANGED weapons by just standing still, the aim I think is to go round or to the side/back of them, but theyre so fast you can't, the lock on system just prevents you, and then if you get caught int their grab you have to do a Quick Time Event!
LET'S TALK ABOUT THOSE QUICK TIME EVENTS
They suck, a relic of the time and don't belong in this game, especially since theyre broken. I died so many times to these because I needed to cling to my mouse and slam my fingers down so fast, it was so tiring. Bosses will spam these at you forcing to use most of your healing items, and regular enemies will use these too, often killing me in parts of the game where the last save point was 20-30 minutes back.
The WORST instance by far is the drill scene where It wouldn't work, thats right I didn't even finish this trashpile of a game because the QTE was impossible for me. I tried installing fixes, using an autoclicker and other savestates but couldn't get past this section, it's broken and comes so close to the end of the game, just a massive final F-You.
-The amount of enemies the game throws at you is horrendous. In the medical offices before the 2nd boss it will spawn 5 nurses to fight you in a tight corridor or small room ... WHY, why would there be 5 nurses here and why so many? Especially when the combat is so dire.
-Items, ammo and healing placements are really bad, most of the game I had no healing items because the enemies forced me to use them all, You get a lot more near the end but presumably you need those to combat more shitty enemies. Ammo was laughable. For a good 3 hour section in the middle I had no ammo, and after that my guns stopped working, making firearms completely useless.
-As mentioned save points were also a problem, with early on them being very far apart, which didn't help in the section where the game crashed the most and I had no healing items ... horrible balancing.
-The map is broken, a pain to look at and it just looks bad all the time
-Exploration is also really linear and I was never really rewarded for exploring
-Some creature designs are copied from other parts of the series with no regard for their symbolism or meaning, Pyramid Head, Nurses, the closer like enemies "Siams"
-Other enemies have very basic horror designs that don't fit very well into Silent Hill in my opinion
-The cultist enemies are stupid, the look dumb, don't belong in a SH game, have very bad VA and sound effects
-Generally the game is so frustrating and glitchy that your never afraid, enemy noises would spook me, not because they were scary but because it meant I needed to use the god awful combat system and go through my resources again.
-The story is either trite, predictable or robbing off a movie or the franchise, see Pyramid head, or scenes heavily taken from movies like Jacobs ladder or Hostel.
-If it's not those things it makes little sense
-Characters aren't nearly fleshed out enough, you might see them two or three times throughout the whole game, and often the first time you meet it's not notable at all. They try to go for something with these characters, especially the Shepard family but it all falls flat because theres no reason to care about any of them, theyre bland, look bad, and don't feel like they have a reason to exist.
-Wheeler being the exception because he's kinda funny and makes some sections of combat playable because you have help
-The cult plot kicks in so late into the game and is so sudden, it just falls flat
-The fact that an Objective menu needed to exist is telling to how confusing the game is, because its so hard to understand what the hell you're meant to do at any given time ... like why am I going through this graveyard?
-Also the objectives often don't help at all, especially at the end of the game, it's so half-assed, just "look for josh" or something similar.
-Often I would have to backtrack around rooms, to find something so unobvious , just confusing and messy map layout.
- The endings felt anticlimactic, or downright insulting like the Pyramid Head ending, the UFO ending is the only good one because at least it's funny.
This game is a nightmare, and theres still more bits I could nag about it. Stay clear, ignore this steaming trashpile, it's the worst game I've ever had the displeasure of playing.
