Ship of Fools Review (noe)
Charming and unique; although tragically short. A fantastic experience all the same, one which will hopefully be expanded with future updates.
The introduction is quite abruptly paced, but that becomes negligible once players get into the actual gameplay. Overall this experience doesn't have a particularly interesting story or lore, however the world looks and sounds great regardless.
The process of fighting enemies and defending the ship is very engaging and snugly designed. It definitely has room for some more diversifying mechanics but the core system is really compelling. There's a fair amount of variety with the unlocks, items and map destinations; although not so much with enemies. The game is relatively functional in both cooperative and solo play, although playing with another individual particularly highlights that the experience could use some additional basic mechanics to deepen the gameplay flow. In solo play combat is more frantic and thus becomes much more engaging by comparison.
Currently there are three main areas each with several enemy types and one boss to play through in a run. It feels like the game needs at least four or five areas, each with several new enemy types and boss modifiers; for it to really be a fleshed out experience. In a way this game almost feels like its in Early Access due to the sheer lack of overall content.
It still offers a unique and fun experience, but a short one relative to the price. Hopefully this game will receive new additions in its post launch support. However the experience that it does currently offer is indeed still worthwhile.
If you're interested in finding more games like this I've probably reviewed quite a few on my curator page here .
