Ryse: Son of Rome Review (LaithianIturbide)

Its not a bad game by any means but you can totally go without playing it. You will not feel as if you missed out on anything. That being said its a fighting game, (not like mortal combat), where you play as a Roman soldier who is most of the time fighting off a lot of opponents. The graphics look great and the story isn't so bad but definitely not exciting. I remember having a hard time trying to get myself to play it because it felt repetitive and the story did not drive my interest. If you are looking for a mindless "action-adventure hack and slash" with a huge emphasis on a non-historical but grandiose Roman aesthetic then it is definitely up your ally. Also no glitches or bugs.
When I first began the game I was excited because I'm a huge history nerd, maybe not about the Roman period but was very eager to learn. However I soon found out that the game is kind of an exaggerated Roman aesthetic where the buildings, cities, battles and much more are just too huge to make sense. The story was alright, I won't spoil but it is about revenge for the loss of family and you go after a foreign enemy only to find out it the real enemy was closer to home. I would definitely put this under fiction as there are "gods" that make their way into the story. Overall was not very interested but enjoyed how good everything looked. The graphics are super nice. Overall mid story, great graphics.
The combat is lacking. It basically stays the same throughout the whole game with many of the enemies being really easy or kind of a chore to fight. You can probably learn cool ways to kill them but I just hacked and slashed and had a 95% success rate. There are ballista sections where you fire basically an arrow machine gun at enemies which is very mid. There is an emphasis on leading troops as you are an upper-level officer in the Roman legions but then again its kind of repetitive and in scripted areas only. The most satisfying part of this game is the executions. When you damage an enemy enough you can press a button to commit an execution and there are so many animations of these executions and they look cool. During the animations you can press either of two buttons to increase your points from it, so that you aren't just watching them, you are involved. However if you mess up you don't get penalized in the fight, you still continue with the nice animation. My gripe with this was there needs to be 3-4 simultaneous enemy execution animations and not just 2 enemy executions. Overall mid game play.
TLDR: Mid story, mid combat, good graphics. Mindless "Hack and slash" adventure with a exaggerated Glorious Roman aesthetic that doesn't feel very realistic. Best part is that one speech given by the general, "ROME IS CIVILIZATION, ROME IS ORDER, ROME IS POWER! WE ARE ROME!" Roma Invicta!
