Ruined King: A League of Legends Story Review (Phranc)
Finally, You Can Play League Of Legends Without Playing League Of Legends.
I've always enjoy reading lore pieces and champions' backstory of League Of Legends, but the gameplay often turns me away from them. I yearn for Riot to expend the world of League Of Legends beyond just MOBA to other media or even different genres of video game. And they've done it! They make a turn-based game of League Of Legends with the help of Airship Syndicate. It is about the story of The Ruined King, unshackled and returned, and six unlikely champions must work together to repel Ruination from consuming the whole Bilgewater. Ruined King resembles a lot of the studio's another game of the same genre - Battle Chaser: Nightwar. Many of its key features have been adapted to the new game and I am glad to see issues I have regarding Battle Chaser have been resolved or even improved in Ruined King. The game does still have its own issues. Yet considering how much Airship Syndicate refreshes the formula and how faithfully they address the world of League Of Legends, Ruined King is a great game to playthrough.
Things I Like About Ruined King:
1. Traditional Roles, Flexible Combination
Like Battle Chaser, Ruined King can choose 3 out of 6 champions and relies on the traditional "Tank, DPS, Support" trio, but unlike Battle Chaser, Ruined King offers way more flexibility than its predecessor. Even though each character has obvious build direction, you can still bend the rule and make some adjustment. For example, Illoai is a healing tank. She specializes in healing with her attacks and the number of tentacles active on the field. She can also focus on linear burst damage and tentacle damage to pick up weaken enemies without needing another turn. Pyke is another great example. He is a polarized assassin. The ripper is a insane DPS machine who can play the role of executioner or debuff master: gaining extra healing and money for each terminated enemies by his hands, or taking advantages of each critical attack applying additional debuff. Besides champions' builds, combat encounters are way more balanced, which means not every battle is a mini DPS check, which in terms gives the players more room to choose team composition based on their preference.
2. Dynamic Combat
In Battle Chaser, the turn-based combat is in its vanila form. Whoever has the highest Haste goes first, which is pretty much the only factor that determines the flow of combat. In Ruined King, however, combat has some refreshing features to keep the fight tight and fun. At the bottom of the screen there are three lanes, Speed, Balance, and Power lane, that champions and enemies interact with. Abilities can be placed at these lanes to decide either how fast the champion performs the ability or how hard can the champion hit with the ability. Enemies can also perform the same way as players do, so players must take this factor into consideration when choosing the lanes. Moreover, a random wild card will be rolled before each combat. These cards will placed a random buff or debuff to whoever stays in the effect area when it reaches the left end side. This feature creates another dynamic interaction to flow of combat. Since using Speed or Power version of abilities places champion icon on different location of the lane, players should think about whether it is worth it of using those abilities to take the effect of the wild card. It is also interesting to use some abilities to push and pull enemies' location at the lane, pushing enemies into debuff zone and pulling them out of buff zone.
3. Other Compliments
→Beautiful rendition of Bilgewater and Shadow Isle.
→Faithful recreation of the beloved champions.
→Fishing mini games, because why not?!
→The little conversations between meals really showcase champions' personalities.
→Scanning is a great reminder to make sure players don`t miss anything.
Things I Dislike About Ruined King:
Complaints
→Map sometimes can be hard to read due to different region layers upon each other.
→Walking back and forth the map can be a chore due to how dense the map can be and how specific each teleporter is placed.
→Pointing out quests' location can be bugged, can be vague, or can straight out skip a few steps(aka, the legendary weapon parts hunt).
→Why does the game limit the number of quests tracked to 5?
→I wish you can choose party members whenever and wherever I want.
→I wish the equipment you obtain can scale equally to you current level.
