RPG Maker MV Review (bootsishappy01)
Pretty fun software to make RPGs on. Let me give you some PROs and CONs
PROS:
- Easy to Use with tutorials everywhere on the internet (some even sprinkled within the engine itself)
- Comes with everything you need to make a pretty basic RPG
- Comes with extra DLC in the Steam folder.
- Allows for the importing of extra resources, like plug-ins (will be explained later) and art and assets the user made
- Pretty good default assets
- Ability to sell and monetize any games made in the engine.
- Character generator allows you to create "custom" characters (if you don't like the HaroldThereseMarshaLucius squad)
CONS:
- The kid feature in the character generator comes with very little customization choices.
- There's no code editor like in the previous versions so if you want to make a plugin you're going to have to download external software
- Animations in the front view don't play when an enemy is using an attack on the party.
- The animation editor is a little bit hard to understand at first (which took 2 steps forward, 1 step back in MZ)
- This honestly depends on the computer you use, but if you use a laptop like mine (HP notebook with Intel 11th gen Core processor) there's going to be some (purely) visual bugs that popup throughout use of the engine. But it at least doesn't affect the actual gameplay/testing.
- if you're using resources from vx, ace, xp, 2k3, 2k or other. Some (or all) of the
files won't work with MV, which will require either editing them to be compatible, or having to rid them for new assets
(NOTE: A plugin is code externally written to be plugged into the base engine in order to satisfy functions not capable by the original engine.)
But all in all in my personal opinion of the software, it's great! It has a big community, and MV by far has (one of) the biggest amount of users in RPGMaker history. Can this software do everything? Ehhh it depends, if you're going to make a 1st person shooter or 3D game then RPGMaker is NOT the right choice for you (...yet, a new RPG Maker called RPGMaker Unite which is essentially a plugin for Unity is coming out soon and may be a potential game changer).
If you're making a platformer or some other genre then you're stretching the engine out a bit, but not too much.
RPGMaker is made for a specific type of RPG, top-down 2d Turn based RPG games, so anything else is going to make it
bend like one of those "bendable" pencils (you know the type, bend it a little and it's okay. Too much and it'll snap).
So with that said, I recommend this software to those who would like to create a basic turn based RPG with plenty of resources, and the ability to import your own, and download DLC and other assets from the very big community that is the RPGMaker Community!.
