RimWorld: Odyssey Review (Mave)
Ngl, I got a mixed feelings about this. On paper we had a lot of great promises: modular ship-base, various biomes, modded weapons, new dungeons. Right now I feel like I've tried maybe 50% of content and while it is functional, I can't shake off the feeling that many of these things aren't quite done in mind with other things.
For example, the ship is very limited in its size, meaning you'll struggle for a long time to fit more than some basic stuff into it. But... every other dlc NEEDS additional space - biotech needs gene banks, ideology needs temple and don't get me started on anomaly. You know what else needs space? Generators. Solars and wind turbines are massive, chem generators will compete for chemfuel with ship itself. The idea to make ship into a base feels very weird when you realize how limiting as a base the ship is. Some stuff won't work at all, like geothermals, since they can't be moved to a new map. The maps themselves start mattering less and less because you are constantly moving your ship around, speaking of which, you _are_ forced to move your ship around every time.
But fine, what else do we have? New biomes, locations and random dungeons. All dungeons are more or less the same, somewhat improved from what we had earlier, but essentially its just a bunch of rooms with loot in it and a few new enemies. I guess you find more loot which can sustain you (chemfuel, meds, packaged meals) but they can't be lived in at all. I can't really make it into a complain by itself, but it feels like instead of truly making them something completely new and interesting, its a minor repaint.
The weapon mods are... just random rpg-like traits similar to persona weapon traits. Not really what I expected when mentioning weapons with mods.
You also get to make your own shuttle but its range is weirdly small. Honestly I'm still unable to get to any asteroids because basic thrusters don't give enough range but you can't make better thrusters before visiting them. I might be stupid on this one but there's that.
Essentially, my complaint is that many things in rimworld have been designed and balanced with a singular stationary base in mind, but now it gets hit the most. Who cares about a siege, infestation, toxic wastes when you can just fly off every couple of days? You can cheese many quests like this as well. But most importantly, is there a point in having many unique biomes with unusual conditions if you are never required to stay in one or even visit them in first place?
