Resident Evil Re:Verse Review (Hot Traveler)
I really wouldn't say this game is a bad one. It's very middle of the road. As 5/10 as an online game can get. It's a game. It functions. You can play it. But if I don't believe the game is bad, then why am I giving it a negative review? Simple. This game had zero effort put into it. Capcom never truly cared about this game.
First, however, I'd like to state the things I like about the game. Even if online isn't really Resident Evil's forte (I'm not even a big fan of their co-op schtick in RE5 or RE6), I actually like the idea of the game. A big love letter crossover for RE fans that contains a ton of characters, villains, and locations from the entire RE franchise as a celebration for RE's 25th anniversary. I also like the idea of being resurrected as an enemy and getting a revenge kill. I can't sit here and lie and tell you it isn't fun getting brought back as Super Tyrant and skewering the guy that just killed me. But the minuscule amount of content here for a 25th anniversary celebration is insane, and extremely low effort. It really feels like Capcom made this game just to make a quick buck and then run off with the money.
For starters, on release, this game only had two maps: The RPD, and the Baker's House, with only one more map being added later, which was the Village from RE8. That's only three maps to cycle from in total. And they're all asset flips from the most recent RE games at the time, being modified to be tinier and work better for gameplay. As an RE game that's meant to celebrate everything RE, it's really disappointing that we not only got just three maps, but that none of them were locations from older games. Imagine if we got a couple more maps from RE1/RE1R, CV, RE0, RE4, RE5, RE6. Hell, even some more obscure ones like Outbreak and Dead Aim. What's even weirder is that we didn't even get an RE3R map. Sure, RE3R isn't the best game or Remake ever, but why skip over it and right to RE8?
Then there's the character selection. The game released with six characters, which isn't too bad. But instead of getting really cool characters from older games like Rebecca, Barry, Wesker, Carlos, Luis, Sheva, and more for post-release content, we got those four fucking nobody agents from RE8 that show up alongside Chris for about one minute before never being seen again. Like I said, it really feels like they just half assed all of this and just threw in whatever was easiest for them to develop into the game because they didn't want to bother with any effort. The villains side only got one new creature. And like the maps, they're all villains and creatures exclusive to the "modern" games (RE7 and onward). I could give a list of creatures from previous RE games that they could've added, but I think you get the idea.
I'd argue the worst, and simultaneously best part of the game is the micro-transactions for exclusive cosmetics, which oddly enough had the most effort put into them, and I think that goes to show what they were really primarily focused on with this one. It's the only content in the entire game that gives nods to other RE games that weren't the newest ones at the time, with Super Tyrant getting an RE2 OG skin, Chris and Jill getting RE5 skins, Leon getting an RE6 skin, Claire getting a Revelations 2 skin, and they even got into more obscure games, like an RE Outbreak skin for the Hunter Y, an Umbrella Chronicles skin for Ada, and a goddamn Mercenaries 3D skin for Hunk. But, of course, all of these skins, that are probably the best part about the game and show the potential it had, are locked behind a paywall. The game even has a battlepass shoved in there with a ton of premium tier cosmetics that just aren't worth the money.
And now, the game is finally coming to a close, being shutdown on June 29th of this year. I can't exactly say I'm sad about it. This almost feels deserved, and it's a miracle the servers even survived this long with how desolate they currently are. But I can say that it's disappointing to see all the potential REVerse had completely thrown away. The way I see it, this was the final nail in the coffin for Capcom's attempt at online games. And honestly? It's probably for the best.
Edit: I have now perfected the game. To those in the future who may somehow see this review after the servers have shutdown (which is happening four days from now), don't feel bummed or worried that you missed out on REVerse, because the truth is, there's nothing, or, there WAS nothing to miss out on. There is nothing new to experience here. Nothing special. It's an empty husk filled with micro-transactions, and it's probably for the best that you never touched it. As harsh as it sounds, this game deserves to be forgotten.
