Remnant II: The Dark Horizon Review (Dominus)
I'm feeling... whelmed. I can't give this DLC a good or bad rating, as it lands somewhere in the middle. N'erud is my favorite world, and I'm glad it received some attention, with plenty of great lore and a story that delves into N'erud's past and reveals what really happened to the Dryzyr. However, the gameplay in the new story is a bit of a mixed bag. The overworld is massive due to the introduction of verticality through the glider, which I found enjoyable, as the game's exploration up until now has been fairly linear. Most of the new enemies are unique and fun to fight, and the final boss battle is one of the coolest and most visually impressive in the game. As expected from a Remnant DLC, there are plenty of secrets to discover, along with a number of new, fun weapons introduced in this update.
Unfortunately, the DLC also has its fair share of downsides. Many of the new dungeons and challenges are more frustrating than fun, relying heavily on platforming and even stealth, which feels out of place. The large overworld, while impressive, feels more lifeless and less exciting to explore. The new Warden archetype is somewhat underwhelming, as it’s designed to be more of a support/tank role rather than a flashy DPS like the Ritualist or Invoker. Additionally, the prism system introduced in the free update is not very intuitive and, in its current form, feels extremely grindy and frustrating. Finally, it's disappointing that this is the last DLC for Remnant 2, knowing we likely won't see more content updates or a brand new world, as Gunfire Games moves on to Darksiders.
Overall, it's a decent DLC, but it's not the magnum opus it was advertised to be. Regardless, it's still more Remnant, and for any fans of the game, it's worth returning to play through a few times.
