Remnant: From the Ashes Review (Koballis)
I've played the game for a bit over 50 hours now and to say I'm addicted to it would be an understatement. This game has 4 difficulties (excluding "Hardcore" which deletes your character upon death)
- Normal: A casual yet still fairly challenging (if you play solo) playthrough. You can enjoy the story easier and there is a LOT to read (so I kinda recommend playing solo for the story) and immerse yourself in.
- Hard: A slightly more difficult but still manageable mode, not over the top but provides a fair and balanced difficulty increase. Still easy for squads of 3 but you'll probably still die a few times anyways.
- Nightmare: You guessed it, it's a nightmare. The game for some reason decided to make the difference between Normal/Hard and Nightmare/Apocalypse literally massive. Enemies have way more health and some mobs can 2 shot you. Yeah, it's hard. However if you are playing with a trio and have some experience I HIGHLY recommend trying this difficulty out, it's a lot of fun (personally) for me and my friends to experience an actual challenge together. I will say, however; that for some this difficulty may prove to be too much.
- Apocalypse: You will die. Many times. Will you persevere or beg for mercy? That, my friend; is up to you. This difficulty will break you down, you may even rage. But if it isn't satisfying to kill a boss on this difficulty I don't know what is. Truly this is a difficulty level for true gamers.
I should also add that aside from the main story and difficulty there is also Survival Mode which has no effect on the main campaign *(apart from unlocking rewards by killing a number of bosses in one run)* and Adventure Mode which doesn't rewrite your main campaign but allows you to farm resources and retry an area to get different bosses freely. I will also add that you CAN in fact reroll your campaign at any time you so desire, allowing you to change the difficulty and everything.
Benefits to each game mode.
Main Campaign - Story Progression, Loot, Unlocks
Adventure Mode - Loot, Unlocks
Survival: Unlocks
Tips
- I recommend playing Single Player on Normal difficulty, you can change difficulty at any time anyways to make the game more challenging if you so desire by rerolling campaign or doing a quick Adventure Mode instance.
- I recommend playing Survival Mode with 3 players (preferably friends and with a stable connection) as playing it solo is really difficult and time consuming, not to mention if you end up getting knocked down it's GG.
- I recommend not restarting main campaign if you want to get a different boss weapon/items because you can just use the Adventure Mode to farm them, it's all luck based regardless.
- Your equipment level will determine your in-game difficulty, meaning if your friend starts a new character and you are on a character with level 20 gear, your friend will be getting absolutely destroyed by the easiest mobs in the game because his equipment won't be up to standard. Make sure to take caution with how you build and work around your friends/randos within the game so you aren't ruining the game for anyone.
- There is a TON of hidden loot, if someone is running around collecting it - may be worth it to allow them the time to run around and collect, never know what they may find. Instead of just kicking them from the game for taking too long, maybe go help them out and look for loot alongside them. If you really don't want to wait up obviously you can just kick them, but more often than not they will find something you may have missed.
- Have fun!
