Rebel Inc: Escalation Review (Wragan)
First things first, if you found this game because of Plague Inc (like me) then don't expect it to be EXACTLY like that! What you can expect is that with it's different gameplay, new and/or improved gameplay options they showed the same amount of creativity in making this game such an easily addictive, fun on easy, thinking forcing on higher difficulties. Ndemic Creations took some very good parts from Plague Inc. and used them to build a really fun new game. The game feels familiar and entirely new at the same time.
GAMEPLAY:
- You'll try to Stabilize the chosen map's zones by implementing Initiatives (upgrading the local's lives) and
fighting off Insurgents. You can win by getting every regions Stable while keeping the Insurgents in check
or by making a Peace Deal with them (they will become more talkative after you keep kicking their asses).
- First, you'll choose a map (different layouts require different tactics and fund/unit allocation), then a
Governor (with some passive and active Pros and Cons), then put together your advisory team (they give
passive bonuses, like Genes from Plague Inc).
- After starting the game, you'll get to starting Initiatives. They cover many areas - education, roads, jobs etc.
Naturally, you will want to get as many done as possible, but once the Insurgents appear, you will really
start to count every cent to get the best ones to secure the zones support.
- To do so, you'll have cash to fund a lot of things, which you get more in every month (except for the
Economist). Constantly checking these numbers will give you good ideas about what to upgrade, which
initiative to get/soldiers to train and when. Ndemic really nailed these parts to be easy to manage but
punishing if ignored. Later, you can have military units to fight of Insurgents in the regions they attack. You
can also place Garrisons on zones, which can support units and block Insurgent movements (the Garrisons
are one of my favorite functions).
- There are several stats to watch (like in Plague Inc) - Support, Inflation and Corruption. They can affect not
just the basic gameplay (i.e. high Inflation will make everything more expensive), but also the events can
become much worse because of them (for example - more likely costs-overrun). The most important one
to watch is your Reputation (quite similar to Authority from Plague Inc's Cure Mode) - if it reaches zero, you
lost! Stabilizing a zone gets you Reputation, also some Initiatives and events - but failing to getting zones
and/or not keeping the Insurgents in check will result in Reputation loss.
- During the game, you will get into conflicts with the Insurgents. For this, you will be able to get two types
of soldier units - Coalition (temporally) and National (permanent). The first ones you can get fast and they
are quite strong, but they'll eventually leave, unless you sacrifice Reputation to keep them for some more
time. The National soldiers are trained much longer, and they are weak without additional upgrades, but
once you get them ,they stay forever. It's worth mentioning that you won't have that many units, this game
isn't a Starcraft of C&C RTS - and they also won't die in combat. They are there for additional immersion
and tactical function purposes.
These are just some of the basic functions of the game. All in all, I really enjoy it so far, both the base game and the DLCs are fun to play with, make me keep thinking up plans to win. If you enjoy management games with some tactical gameplay, then give it a try!
