Quake II Review (Coffin Nail Mann)
I have edited this review following the new release of Quake 2. You can find my original post for the old steam release below.
Quake 2 has always seemed like it would never get the refurb treatment. Yet, just a couple days before I wrote this review, it got updated. I personally will go through the whole game. In other news, Quake 2 got some UI modifications from the Quake remaster. The weapon wheel from the previous game makes a return! However, this time it is used for a navigation system and any power-ups you might find (Such as the Quad Damage and Silencer to give an example) along the way. Weapon management, like the Doom 1 and 2 re-releases, is dedicated to the scroll wheel. All in all, the controls and UI have been revitalized and more quality of life changes were added to the game. I'm glad I pre-purchased the game back when it was still the DOS (or some variant of it) release here on Steam. As I never finished Quake 2 originally, I will now have more reason to come back and play this game again! A small little thanks to the teams that worked on this... you did amazing! Much love!

How is this version of Quake 2? Its alright. Keep that in mind.
Unlike its predecessor, Quake, this came after some of id Software split. Therefore, it changed what the game might have been. Its mechanics are somewhat different from the original. Expect barely any ambiance like Quake 1. Trent Reznor turned down this game after he saw it: now for some that is a red flag. Its not. You instead get a metal soundtrack, which is really good (created by Sonic Mayhem). The deathmatch, as I have heard, is pretty good. The action in this game is really good for a sci-fi shooter of the time. The best part for gib enjoyers? EVERY SINGLE ENEMY GIBS.
EVERY. LAST. ONE.
Now, this game lacks SOME things that would make it good for a modern release (keep in mind these are Quality of Life improvements). Unlike Quake 1, which got a huge makeover in terms of the system, this game is running out of the command prompt. That isn't bad at all. However many people want the systems from Quake1's new port carried over to this. It would help the game tremendously and may up the player count.
Another thing, just separate from the rest... The expansion packs are sold separately. The new Quake remaster added all of those in the game, while you'll still have to grab everything for this (unless they remake it as well, which would be nice.
I'd say its worth the buy!
