Prison Architect: Gangs Review (Wally the Watermelon)

TL;DR It's 3 or 4 free mods for the price of a milkshake, and does not work with old prisons

So I've been playing the game a lot recently, figured I'd try out the new DLC. So I bought it and loaded up the prison I've been playing. About an hour in and I got bored. About half the features they said have been added were not working. The rooms did not show up, the bad cops weren't doing anything, gangs really had not changed that much.
Turns out, things literally had not changed. Started a new prison and it started working. So I guess RIP old prisons if you want to use the new gang systems. Which is honestly a bit of a bummer. But carrying on, I started the new prison and got about another 3 hours in before I felt like I've seen what the DLC offers.
So what does this particular milkshake add?
The Good

-There's some more mail, love letters and prisoners now write mail that has to be sent out through exports. Honestly it clogs up exports but its a nice little touch
-More gang fighting, makes it more engaging
-Some nice new objects, like the much needed metal stool
-New easy reform programs, including exciting reform like breathing, better jesus, and literal fight club
-Gangs now murder each other, improving cash flow

The Meh

-Gangs are now a lot of effort. Separation, new traits, gang assassinations, riots, its both fun/new and a lot of focus
-New guard program, where the guards finally learn prisoners having weapons is bad (I don't know what this really does gameplay wise)
-Some meh new objects, like more weights, because exercising 5 ways wasn't enough, we needed 10
-I usually shove everyone in one box for the cash savings, which now that gangs actually fight, makes this strategy not as effective
-A new prison info menu which is the equivalent of the snitch sorter mod

The Bad

-Prisoners actually require tables instead of just benches in the canteen
-Forced me to make a new prison
-Is the price of a milkshake
-Nerfed the assault rifle in escape mode

So in summary, it does add some stuff, it does change gameplay, and there also is a lot of stuff that feels surface level as Paradox's attempt to pad out the $6 price tag. So if you want to skip the milkshake and buy this, do it. If not, get the milkshake. Personally I like banana foster flavored.

Edit 6/22:
So a user was kind enough to reach out to me and show me a way to get the new DLC working on old prisons with the legacy gangs already enabled. I made a copy of my save before doing this just to be safe.
Open up the text file for your prison and change the line of:
GangsMode Legacy
to
GangsMode Medium
(or your preferred setting)
Save the file, load up the prison, save and reload the prison, and it flushes out the old gangs and puts in the new system. Yaay slightly less shitty
