Pocky & Rocky Reshrined Review (Toltage)

Another Tengo Project reimagination of their older works, this time being Pocky and Rocky/Kiki Kaikai for SNES. Much like Wild Guns Reloaded and The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors, Pocky and Rocky Reshrined takes its source material and revamps it for modern day systems, adding in new mechanics that don't detract from gameplay, additional characters that offer new playstyles, and beautiful updated art to flesh out the original sprite work for a larger screenspace. It's still a challenging arcade style game that doesn't keep the barrier of winning too high, but leaves room to improve and master its stages. If the gameplay in motion interests you, it should be right up your alley. And if you're already familiar with Pocky and Rocky SNES, there's a slew of twists and turns to make things fresh again.
As an aside (as others have noted), the Steam version is essentially the equivalent of the uncensored Japanese console versions; no weird censoring on Ame-no-Uzume, which is neat. Unrelated to that, the game even supports Playstation button icons if you happen to be using a Sony controller through Steam.
I'd say the only real downside to the game is that there's no dedicated online co-op support. That being said, there's Steam remote play which (sort of) makes up for that. It's not as perfect as actual couch co-op, but it's an option.
Overall one of my personal favorites, clearly a product of passion alongside the other recent Tengo Project remakes and worth playing. Here's hoping The Ninja Saviors sees a Steam release too.
