Phantom Spark Review (JohnDogma)

A solid time-trial racing game.

If you've ever played Trackmania you will feel very at home with this one. The core mechanics are extremely similar.
I wouldn't say this game is 10 / 10 must play but it's worth it if you're into playing the same level over and over shaving .005 seconds off at a time trying to beat yourself or people on the leaderboards, as that's the bulk of the content.
Racing
Works well on keyboard so far. W to go A & D to turn, S to brake (although if you're using your brake you probably need a better line). It seems the key is to find the racing path where you don't have to let off the gas, keeping momentum is paramount.
Tracks
30 Tracks to try, 10 in each " Domain "
The differences between domains are there, but it really feels the same. The challenge of the tracks doesn't bump up that much between them, just the times required to get tier 4 medal. The mechanics are mostly the same aside from 1 gimmick mechanic that sets them apart.
Customization
Not a whole lot going on here. You don't really customize your spark, you just unlock new skins as you progress. It would have been neat to see at least different color options on top of each skin so you can tweak it to your liking a bit better.
Soundtrack
It's very fitting for the vibe. Some liquid drum n bass that's not too distracting, but in turn makes it forgettable to me. I wouldn't personally listen to the soundtrack outside of the game, as opposed to a game like Neon White's absolute banger of a setlist.
Story / Characters
There's a bit of narration that goes on each Domain has like a creator or something that'll talk to you in between races and give you an Ai ghost to try and beat, but they get in the way pretty quick. Too existential for my taste. Also it's annoying when you beat their ghost, the dialogue changes the commands from Enter to try again and Escape to go the map, to Enter to go to the map and Escape to try again. It seems odd to flip these. Also I know damn well my options are stay here and try again OR go back to the map, I don't need you to tell me every time.
Overall
I like the game. I'll keep playing it. I recommend it to those that like the time-trial genre, or want a break from Trackmania. Although I would personally say $20 for full price is kind of a big ask for what's here.
