Overland Review (Skulldugged)
Between Steam and my Switch I have a lot of time logged in Overland. Strong and consistent aesthetic, which is always the case with Finji titles. People seem to go back and forth in reviews on if the game is too punishingly difficult or if it is too easy. I played it when it first came out on Switch, and since my first time playing they've made a few updates and added an easier mode, because I remember it being more difficult on Normal that it was playing it this time on Steam. Unless you find games of this style inherently difficult I think the new Normal setting is easy enough for casual players.
Plays well on Steam Deck. Responds mostly as you would think with the controller, but doesn't have actual controller mapping with the Deck. It displays PC symbols on the menus, and there's no button mapped for the "Head Out" function, but between the deck itself and the touch screen I don't have any huge complaints. Full Compat would be great, but it's playable.
Good for fans of stories like Annihilation and Roadside Picnic, or even something like The Stand. There isn't a ton of overt world-building in the game, but it similar themes and tones. More variation in the between-stop dialogue would make the game feel less repetitive and some stronger lore would add replay value, but the game has been out for awhile and Finji has been busy since then. After my initial obsession on Switch this has become a game that I sometimes get the itch to play, play for awhile in intense bursts, and then put down again for ages.
