Outlast: Whistleblower Review (Dr Coomer)
Outlast Whistleblower is the single D.L.C package for Outlast. Now, as much as I hate to pay for stuff that should be included with the game in the first place, I really have to say how impressed I am by Whistleblower. It's like the developers looked at the base game, asked themselves 'How do we make this even more messed up and terrifying?' and then just went all out for this D.L.C.
Now Outlast already had an intriguing story, and ends on a pretty unsatisfying and cliche ending - albeit one that makes us wonder where the story can go from here. So along comes Whistleblower which gives us a tale that's not only got a better story than the base game, but which also acts as a prequel and sequel. Given a much needed backstory for the person who tipped off journalist Miles Upshur is one thing, but this D.L.C gives us an even more distressing and horrifying experience deep in Mount Massive Asylum. The 'bosses' in this game are as scary as ever, and that's a big understatement for 'the groom', Eddie Gluskin. He's as tall and wide as a boxer and completely psychotic, obsessed with turning the player into his bride. And he's got just the tools for the job.
Sure, there's still the eye-rolling jump-scare here and there, but I really can't criticise if the developers just want to have a little fun. With the amount of mental torment and psychological terror at work here, I think it's safe to say they've earned it. The score, composed by Samuel Laflamme, is just perfect, and the music that plays when you finally escape the asylum is incredibly satisfying. I neglected to say so in my review of the main game, but the controls in Outlast feel great - providing accurate control well enough while also being tailored to feel like you're actually moving a real full-grown man. Really good stuff, and a sleek game engine too! Playing on insane difficulty is pretty wild, and it's the ultimate challenge of survival. Good luck to all those who attempt it.
I guess Red Barrels outdid themselves here, considering the base game actually feels like the side-plot when compared to Whistleblower. And I'll do those guys a favour and not mention my thoughts on Outlast II in this review. Sigh...
Anyway, take my word, if you enjoyed Outlast, then you NEED to buy this D.L.C right now!
If the game gets too scary for you, don't worry. It'll be over soon. Just close your eyes. Close your eyes and think... of our children.
