Outer Wilds: Echoes of the Eye Review (Pixit)
If you are someone who hasn't played the base game, don't even read the reviews. Play the base game, then come back to this before reading them.
To the people who have already finished the base game and are looking for more, you will not get that here, but that's okay. Instead of the normal Outer Wilds experience, you are going to find something much better and different. I never thought that an expansion/DLC could be this amazing; it turns out I was too close-minded.
Let me start with this: I don't like horror games, like, at all. However, because of the phenomenal experience I had with the base game, I forced myself to go through with this and play it fully. I was so glad I did. Not only does it connect to the base game in an amazing way, but it expands upon it while giving the player a great new experience. Very slight base game spoiler: I had trouble with going below Giant's Deep because of the immense fear I have of deep water and dark spaces. This game pushed me even further to my limit, but I pushed hard to continue playing it, and I am so glad I did.
Yet again, the music was fantastic, using the cinematic style instead of the normal background music. If you are teetering on the edge of buying the DLC, remember how amazing the music was in the base game. I would dare say it's even better with some of the scenes.
I do want to say a few things about Echoes of the Eye, so very slight spoilers but nothing revealing. More about how things were executed.
The way the new species is handled is beyond words. You are introduced to them in slides and whatnot, kind of like the Nomai, but as things progress, it gets different. For about half or more of the game, you don't get to see them. They are hidden behind walls, or maybe you get a brief glance of them. This makes the reveal that much scarier.
The new game mechanics are unlike anything I have ever seen in a game; they are just so unique. The entire ship is perfect, feature-wise. Dynamic fluid simulation that also bends and curves around a ring, and honestly, with almost no performance impact. This takes base game features and adds tons of new things to them, leaving you shocked when you discover the new game mechanics.
