Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission Review (NLxAROSA)
A 2023 reimagining of the 1987 classic by Taito. The original was a masterpiece that started in the arcade halls (cabinet with a mounted Uzi replica light gun) and ported to other platforms with varying levels of success.
While I don't think this is a masterpiece like the original it does a few things quite well. It's blending the traditional side-scrolling gameplay from Operation Wolf with the more 3-dimensional aspects of its successor Operation Thunderbolt, and throws in a few tricks of its own.
The cartoon-ish graphics and audio will not be to everyones liking, but I think it will stand the test of time better. Gameplay is pretty solid, the guns really pop out audio wise and it's all very smooth.
I just want a bit more, it's a pretty short game. Almost zero marketing so nobody is playing. I played the non-VR version but it supports VR too, though I do not know how well. There's also a Quest version apparently, but haven't played it.
If this were a full-price game I would not recommend it, but it's available for 17.50 EUR in EU right now, so you plenty of fun and value for that amount. I just hope it's not day-1 abandonware.
