One Btn Bosses Review (Vookatos)

An arcade game that reminds me of Just Shapes and Beats. Very minimalisting dodge-em-up, I suppose.

The central gimmick of the game is that you only have one button to perform actions with. The game isn't particularly different from level to level, placing you on some kind of loop where you continuously move. Clicking or pressing a button will turn you around by default, but you can choose your manner of attacking (which is by default automatic, you shoot stronger bullets with more speed) and what the action button does.

As you would probably expect, the game is fairly difficult, and if you're very into arcadey titles provides you with ranking after each level. Around halfway through the campaign it also unlocks a roguelike mode where you choose levels on a Slay the Spire-like map and choose upgrades after each smaller battle. It doesn't feel as replayable as a roguelike mode should be, but I think I've enjoyed it more than the regular game thanks to randomness involved.

Points you get acts as exp, unlocking new methods of play and new color schemes, and this is probably the only thing where game feels a little undercooked. Despite being called a Grind, you can unlock everything halfway through the campaign if you've tried the roguelike mode a few times. Wish there were more colors or options, as if you don't care for rankings the game goes by fairly quickly, taking me 2.5 hours. Granted, I haven't finished some of the levels since thankfully the "worlds" of the game only require some victories. Still, I very much had fun figuring out each of the game's short levels.

I also was not a fan of most color schemes. It's cool to see so many of them themed around progressive ideas: many are queer flags, and there's a Free Palestine one, but I found most of them to be almost painful to look at, so I stuck with the basic Dark theme for my playthrough.

I don't think this game is exactly for me, but if you're into arcade action titles like Shapes and Beats, shmups, and maybe rhythm games, check this one out!
