Once Upon a Jester Review (SmoothJazz)
A charming game about two rascals discovering the joy of improv theatre. It's funny and sweet.
The game is really good at conveying a sense of casual fun. I really liked the voice acting. From the developer's website: "Often half improvised, we try to go for first takes and leave imperfections in the recordings, thereby capturing a moment in time that cannot be recreated." I really liked this! The moments where an actor messes up a line or actors are clearly just having fun off-script feel like little gems of human connection.
This feeling of joy and spontaneity is present throughout the game. A lot of the jokes feel more like the silly kind of joke you would come up with in the moment but might take out in a later revision of the script - displaying a kind of silliness that is more characteristic for improv.
This all works great for the game's theme of improv theatre, and conveys a kind of spontaneity that is definitely unique for video games.
