Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus Review (Jevnation ♫)
Highly addictive as the bone brew
Being the second installment in the Oddworld franchise, Abe's Exoddus is the sequel to the lauded adventure platformer Abe's Oddyssey. Having put Rupture Farm, the food processing plant that planned to use Mudokons as products, out of business, Abe now sets out to uncover the mysteries behind the disappearance of his ancestors' bones. Not only that, he has to rescue his fellow Mudokon people from slavery once again and put a stop to the Soulstorm brewery industry.
Exoddus runs on the same engine and have therefore common resources that built the Oddyssey game, as well. Despite being a sequel, players unfamiliar to the Oddworld franchise aren't required to have played the first game due to recap and easy beginning stages that includes brief tutorials. The experienced players, though, they can rest assured that Exoddus has addressed some flaws from the previous game and have got quality-of-life improvements. Now, you can communicate with multiple Mudokons at once, as opposed to being limited to have only one fellow follow you at a time.
Additional contents include new foes like airborne Sligs and gluttonous larvae (yikes). The Mudokons' behavior can also be affected by environments that get them depressed, angry or wired. You also may have to help those who sick (from the Soulstorm brew) or blind, so different methods will be necessary to free them.
Abe's Exoddus is an improvement on the formula that made Oddworld already successful, with new problems adding to new challenges that make it a thrilling and humorous experience overall. The characters in the cutscenes are commonly silly and campy, yet it makes the surrounding plot amusing. In this day and age, I would recommend players to get the R.E.L.I.V.E. mod to run the game in current OS with high resolution and extra features.
