Nuclear Blaze Review (Yotso)

I bought this game on sale for 3.99€. Was it worth it? Yes, it was.
Let me start with the negative. From what I have heard, this game started out as a Game Jam entry. I don't know exactly what they changed between that version and the one you can buy here, but they could have polished it up a bit more. The sound design is oddly disjointed, with stock sounds that don't work well together. I understand that you just take whatever fits for the jam, but later on they should have taken the time to find sounds that fit together. The escalation of the game is jarring. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say you get a twist that I don't think is necessary. I also put this down to the game's game jam roots. It was probably easier to change it up than to explore the core gameplay loop more deeply.
Now for the positives, because I liked the game overall (at 60% off). The core gameplay is fun. At first it seems like all you have to do is aim water at fire, simple. Later, especially on the hard difficulty (hold my beer), you have to be strategic. Simply following the fire as it burns in a circle will never get you to your goal. Personally, I didn't use any of the accessibility features and didn't find the game too hard, but it's nice that they added them. The checkpoint system is fair most of the time. The game is short and sweet, knows when to end and doesn't overstay its welcome.
If they ever make a Nuclear Blaze 2, or if someone else picks up the concept, I would hope for two things.
1) Lose the twist. A game about firefighting can be fun on its own.
2) Explore the core gameplay more deeply. There are different types of fire retardants for different fires, a variety of protective gear, smoke can play a role, etc.
It took me 6 hours to finish the game in normal and hard mode. I didn't find every secret area but I had enough fun with the game and I'm done.
