Not For Broadcast: Live & Spooky Review (DanJam)

I felt from the start that this DLC could be more "marmite" than the rest of the game and I was right. I even had to give it a bit of a chance to go in with an open mind, had I not read prior to this a dev comment saying it would be around an hour for the first playthrough with replay potential I might have been a little disappointed. I'll start with negatives.....firstly that spirit tuning element of the game, I hate as much as the tuning from OG NFB. After the first playthrough and finding it impossible to do in the time offered I realised it could also be switched off in menu's before starting the game for a second time. You can still flip switches and manually fail it to mould the storyline as in the original but it almost feels again like a gameplay feature there for the sake of it. Props to them for understanding and allowing us to play the game the way we want by getting rid of it. Second issue, i've had a couple of crashes where it appeared a video didn't load properly, I didn't get much chance to see the error box but it had the NFB logo and possibly something related to Flashplayer before the game CTD'd. It might not have helped that the game was at that time running at 165hz so i'll see if it happens again at 60hz from now on. Thirdly, er, not sure there is a third actually. Maybe it could have been longer but the scripts can change subtly depending on which order you decide to perform certain actions (I am being careful not to spoil here) which I liked. So not a total third negative then.......I love the homage to Most Haunted, some hints of a show from the 90's which I won't mention but it was very welcome.Overall it's just a short section of what would/could have been in the main game, I don't mean it SHOULD have been, just comparing it. Don't expect a massive storyline, more a pleasant and entertaining side-quest. I'm most impressed by the shock value of certain scenes though which I didn't see coming, they really have pointed it towards the horror genre at times and in that respect it's a shame it didn't time to release with halloween.Either way though, we get more Bannon/Cannon which is worth it on it's own. The guy is a brilliant actor to the point, as with Steve Coogan and Alan Partridge, you can't tell whether he's a really good actor or whether is actually really Patrick Bannon. To fans of the game this is a must have, to those on the fence it might be something to consider more carefully but for the price it offers more than a rental from Amazon of a film for the same cost and you get to keep it so unless you're poor (you have a PC so probably aren't) it's worth the gamble. In my opinion though, we're bloody lucky to have more NFB. One of the lead devs stated in the stream that he saw it as a privilege to have the opportunity to make more, I see it as a privilege to have the chance to play. I should say also at the moment while the launch stream is still there to watch, if you love the game it's something you absolutely need to watch. Some of the best Bannon material ever and I don't think any of it was scripted! Just hope the console launch helps fund greater things in the future.
