Nightmare Reaper Review (CyperAleksi)

Bit of a mixed bag ultimately, I personally vote yes rather than no but it could go either way. Go for sale if you're interested.
+ Lots of levels not counting new game +(+)
+ Huge weapon variety
+ Satisfying effects, feels good to get that ultimate weapon that takes out fifteen enemies at once
+ No need for peekaboo around corners to avoid hitscan which is something I appreciate myself
+ Has enough ammo going around that I actually don't feel the need to preserve it like a madman which is my usual go-to, I really like that. You can't keep most guns with you between stages so it encourages using them, ones you don't take with turn into currency
* Roguelite progression, become stronger as you play, good or bad depending who asks
* Getting the permanent upgrades has you play different minigames to get them (which can be toggled off to skip them), leaves me a bit confused but I suppose having a toggle pleases everyone, although arguably you get several hours less if you skip them. That being said, their gameplay is limited to say the least. It's weird, ok?
* Game is grindy, possibly too much so depending who asks
- Procedurally generated levels so sometimes that key item is in that random corner you don't realise to check
- Permanent upgrades require currency, lot of it being in secret areas, which are kind of a pain to find, especially lategame when maps get even bigger. Not STRICTLY required but seeing that treasure counter not be 0 is going to be a dealbreaker for some, could have been for me
- Once the weaponry expands enough there's going to be so many particles on the screen when you fire you won't see a thing, which in one hand is fine since everything probably got obliterated, but I can see this being a pain in higher new game tiers where things supposedly get even more punishing

All in all I liked it but there were several grievances that took away from the experience, so I would suggest trying the demo first to get a feel for it if nothing else.
