Night in the Woods Review (ScopHotch!)
Night in the Woods is a game I have never thought I would love. At first I did not want to play it as it seemed like another ordinary story-driven game. However it is much more than that. It is evident that the developers made this game with so much love. From the art and music, to the characters, and the whole story itself. The game had so much impact on me not only as a gamer, but as a person.
The art style is really warm and comfy because of the immense autumn vibes this game exudes. The character and background design is so well done. From the buildings to the trees to the characters and NPCs walking around. This game strikes a cozy feeling while also, in some areas, catching a sense of fear or dread.
Mae Borowski, the main character, possesses so much personality and background that you cannot help but feel happiness, sorrow, anger, and sympathy with her. Essentially, every character in the game is written so well that it all makes sense and is not confusing. Mae, Bea, Gregg, and Angus aren't the only ones to receive attention from the developers. Characters like Selma get excellent writing too with regards to her history. The characters in this game make you feel like they are actually real people, with homey dialogue and friendly banter. You will not grow bored with the conversations.
With a story written so well and so good, this game impacted me significantly. These include the histories of these characters, constellations, the economic disarray of Possum Springs, the dark secrets hiding in the forest (or should I say, the woods), and much more. The philosophical discussions the characters get in to are thought provoking. These topics include psychology and mental health, friendship, mortality, religion, and a little bit of politics (although not overtly) and have made me question my own ideals and beliefs. Every little bit of detail is utilized so perfectly and coherently that it forms into a decisive story.
Overall, Night in the Woods is an amazing story-driven game that I highly recommend playing. The developers did great with the amazing art and music, well thought out characters, and the well-written story. I cannot help but thank the developers for making this work of art. If you want a game that hits the senses and the feels, this is a must have.
