Night in the Woods Review (André)
I just wanted to leave this here.
So... I needed this game more than anything else in my life at a certain point. This is an absolutely amazing game. I had seen screenshots and gameplay before buying this 4 years ago, but when I launched NiTW myself I understood I was enamoured with it. The story is a great coming of age tale and the characters are extremely well-written, almost in an uncanny way: they feel like real people with tangible problems and very human flaws and dreams (the game has a habit of getting too real way too many times). Soundtrack is also great as is the art style, making this almost a comfort game to me.
Possum Springs is just a place you want to come back to. I remember walking through town and speaking to all the characters, letting Mae sleep a minute or two while listening to the soundtrack, and the emotions I felt when playing this for the first time. I have all of the achievements now but I still boot up the game every now and then. When the game ended I was happy to see the smile on Mae's face, being worried like hell in the end. But I'm glad everything worked out for her friends and her, even if the ending can be kinda left to interpretation depending on your chosen route.
It's a small world the devs created that I believe now lives by itself.
TL;DR: Must-play title if you enjoy coming of age stories, struggled with mental health and/or higher education, or grew up openly queer/trans. Gave me an existential crisis and made me cry 3 times during my first playthrough. 10/10
