Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom Review (OptimalButthole)

To be honest, I like this game but I’m at 17 hours, I’m not even close to being done. The world is huge and there’s so much that the game wants you to do, from building your kingdom, to finding people in the city which does side quests, and doing side quests to find people from the finding man, to collecting stuff in the world, the skirmishes, collecting kingdom money, collecting kingdom resources, researching, upgrading, and just navigating through it. It’s a lot, I think.
Even though I’m not having that hard of a time, there are some clear things to say.
I’ve grown tired of the dialogue. It’s so boring read, then again it always was even from the start. It’s hard to explain unless you try to read it yourself and believe me when I say that I’ve tried, I’ve tried many times, it’s always awful. I’ve started to try and skip those dialogue completely.
The main story is basic and I’m okay with that, it’s just, the characters that you play as and are surrounded with are all terrible characters and are boring as well. The cinematic cutscenes are okay cause there’s voice acting but that doesn’t help the boring written dialogue and bad story.
The music in goldpaw, which is a city I was in for a little while, has very terrible music. The same music plays during some of the in game cutscenes where there’s no voice overs.
You get so many weapons that can be upgraded 3 times. I’m shocked that there is an option to upgrade them. Why would anyone upgrade it? You’d be losing so many resources by doing so since you keep picking up better weapons with higher stats as you play. If the game gave you plenty of resources where you could pretty much upgrade everyone’s weapons then I’d be okay with that but it doesn’t. Pretty much what is happening is, there are too many systems in this game and I don't think it is balanced for any of it.
The game limits you to how many items you can use per battle. I think that’s kind of rude. Like, really? 10 shoreaways to use per battle? They are the lowest hp items you can get. I understand you can buy a ton but seriously, why not let the player be able to do that?
You have to wait 20 to 40+ minutes for upgrades. :- [
The battle combat is great!
Anyways, after playing the last time for another hour, I’ve become a little uneasy playing any further. The building the kingdom is great, seeing the world is great, it's a beautiful game to look at, but the story and characters leave much to be desired. This is a way better game than the first game and I wish I had more time to invest into it so I can do those boring time consuming quests.
Also, in one of reviews that I just read on steam, the person said “Just do a google search on "ni no kuni 2 bastion stairs" and you will understand.” I must say that they are probably right. I don’t really want to put myself through that, though the stairs does look easy to do after the 1st time of falling.
I had fun for the most part but I think it’s time to move on.
Edit: I just need to say this cause I can’t get it out of my mind. I’m a little upset that one of our main characters is the president of usa. When he woke up in the other world, (I’m paraphrasing) he’s just like “Oh where am I? I’m so young” and that’s it. He then immediately finds some kid and becomes the kids guardian. Also, out of all things that he unknowingly somehow brought into the other world, the dude still had his gun. Do modern presidents even carry a gun? And then he starts using it. It’s so dumb and laughable. Where would he even be getting the ammo for it when it runs out? Well, I don’t know cause you are able to use it whenever when playing the game.
But yeah, the fact that once he wakes up in the other world, he doesn’t mention anything about his family, wife, or kids. It’s just a bare bones crap story and crap writing. Like seriously, a 50+ year old man wakes up in a new world in a young body and doesn’t ever talk about his family or friends or how he misses them? Or asks the natives of this magical land on how he can get back to his home is one of the dumbest things that I’ve ever had the chance of experiencing in a story. It’s so f+#king bad and I tried to dismiss this kind of stuff the whole time when playing the game cause it’s going for the “wholesome” type of story but omg it’s so bad. There’s so much knowledge he could be giving the kid who’s making a kingdom and he’s just there being ordered around and doing what’s “right” for the kingdom.
This is marketed for kids and teens, is it not? I really don’t care if it’s for kids, I still think that they deserve better stories.
I really have little to no faith in the stories from where this game came from anymore. I know there are good stories out there but I have to look into the indie direction. I just think that it’s pathetic to write such a story like this. And the thing is, the game had so much potential. Just needed better pacing and a better story.
