Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom Review (Katelyn49_)

I have many mixed feelings over this game for things it does well and things it does not but i will explain why. This is from the perspective of having already played through the First game. Creatures Faeries and Familiars were a core part of the First game but they are completely wiped from existence in the Second game besides one character Evan will meet during a special event that gives him the right to own a kingdom and misleads the player into thinking this a version of familiars but all it is a small Fae... Combat Instead of using Familiars for combat, they are erased and the characters themselves fight in real time. While the new combat system can be enjoyable and they try to make up the lack of familiars by adding three weapon choices, giving the characters powerful skills and there is wide range of weapons but 90% of the time the player is mashing one of two buttons. There are Skirmishes that player MUST complete several in order to progress through the story and cannot be passed. Battle Tactics can help the player considering what they are facing but there are so many different types of enemies all the player can do is guess. Spells Oliver had a Spellbook that had a bunch of history about the world and even crafted a language that you could use to solve various puzzle throughout the First Game. The spells added to the world building and explained why they were used my wizards. Everything you needed to know about crafting and spells but that is gone in the Second Game. If you need a spell outside of battle all you do is press the interactive button and anyone can cast. There is no originality or world building this way. Quests Some Sidequests have become required in order to progress in the story and become necessary when the player needs to grind for Levels when in the First game they were optional, didn't offer any levels but only money and a bonus if the player had completed enough. Story The beginning hooks the player considering how well put together it is but there's so many contradictions it falls apart very slowly. Why didn't Roland care that New York was very visibly blown up by a missile? Why did Roland choose to stay with Evan when his own world had suffered a blow? He was the current president up to that point. Why would he even consider to leave behind his own world after all that? Didn't he have friends and family? Even Oliver of the first game never truly wanted to leave his own home. He only did temporarily to help the beings that resided in the new world he had found. I really wanted to like this game and find the lovely enjoyment out of it like I did from the first game, I adored it but this game simply doesn't add up with mechanics, story or characters. I tried to give the game a chance for so long but it feels underdeveloped. I can't recommend this game if you have played the First game. Only if you haven't at all. It is a decent rpg on its own ground but not as a sequel.
