Neva Review (iannox.iannotta)
This game is fvck1n bvllsh1t, can't reccomend it enough if you have stuffy nose.
Apart from jokes, this amazing game makes use of a simple gameplay, graphics and story, yet it delivers extremely well. First: it's got very simple gameplay yet it still manages to be extremely original and entertaining (best absolute part in my opinion is winter part 1), bolstering satisfying combat, amazing bosses (definitely NOT the big boar tho, hitbox at release is too big, please do change that, don't be scared tho, you can always turn off and back on combat mode so you can't die and you can still beat the boss), very fun enviromental puzzles and puzzle bosses. The bosses are definitely not hard, they flow beautifully and a big emphasis is put on aesthetics, which brings me to the second point: it makes use of simple graphics, yet I've never seen better art direction in any other indie game, NOT EVEN JOURNEY, and Journey has been up until now my favorite game of all time. Btw, if you know Journey and you enjoyed it, you're gonna have a blast with this one, both aesthetics (even tho this one's way more colorful) and story are definitely inspired by that masterpiece and they managed to recreate that sense of beauty that I always longed for since playing that game for the first time. DO NOT get me started on the music, just... amazing. Anywas, third: the story. I am a SLUT for soft worldbuilding and dialogueless enviromental storytellying and this sh1t DELIVERS on that. Extremely simple story: world is really pretty, peaceful, nature is at it's prime and blablabla, SUDDENLY bad thing happens, world starts decaying, bad guys pop up everywhere and now you gotta fight them. The way this simple story is so elegantely told through visual art heightens that apparent banality into an extremely powerful emotional experience. Final thing: game progression. There's no level up system, just 3 phases: summer, autumn and winter. Throughout each one of these seasons the relationship between your human carachter and Neva the deer-wolf changes, and so does the way you interact with each other to face the world becoming ever more hostile: from you having to protect Neva, to mutually cooperating, to her helping you, it's a beautiful progression that just feels right. This game is unique in its genre and has definitely surpassed its already perfect spiritual master Journey. (a lil advice: don't bother exploring too much, the game is very linear and you won't miss virtually anything by just following the flow of it, I feel like the devs really meant for you to run through it as smoothly as you can, taking in the scenery combined with the amazing and everfitting music).
TEN OUT OF TEN!!!
