Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections Review (Naruto 607)

I've seen people complained about the good, the bad, and the evil of this game. I mostly aim for singleplayer, so I have no idea how the multiplayer system looks like. To me, this game is more or less a stable, reskinned version of UNS4 that released years ago (I'm not surprised at all). New players are introduced with simplified controls that they can grip on before finally hopping into using the original one used on UNS4, except with Tilt controls (that I have a hard time to use in UNS4 and VERY rarely or never used) replaced with Ninjutsu 2 (it's not bad considering we have the same system like that in Naruto-based PS2 games, such as Ultimate Ninja 5). The reason I want this game is because of new characters that UNS4 doesn't have unless using mods (Boruto having Karma mark and Kawaki are the ones I like), and that game is already old enough that it reached EoL update support after Road to Boruto NG DLC came out.

Character Progression

Unlike UNS4 where you have to unlock characters by progressing through the storyline, this one allows you to have access to ALL characters from the start. Yes, from the start. Each of them even had a progression that you can use to get goodies just by leveling up. I had one easy achievement on this just by leveling up and equip a custom set/decoration that has nothing but changed UJ Finishing scene.
The con here, however, is the progression to unlock the goodies. If you have a favorite character used numerous times, his/her proficiency progression will grow faster. However, with other characters, you might find it taking a long time (either because you are not used to him/her, or your character isn't even your favorite). Puppet controllers like Sasori and Kankuro to me are the hardest to control since UNS4.

Storyline

Oh boy, here we go. I've seen every UNS games portray the storytelling, but only in here, the History segment looks like a PowerPoint presentation (someone said about it and didn't recommend this game). Ik UNS4 did have this, but they made it better on the part where Team 7 is fighting against Kaguya up until Naruto vs Sasuke fight part. The system remains since UNS4 and you can unlock goodies by completing optional objectives on each story fragments, except now, playing through the story is optional; you have characters unlocked from the beginning (as I said earlier) and you can just buy them in the Collections menu.
On the other hand, Special Story segment is similar to that of Boruto's Tale segment in UNS4, except here, there's no such thing as "exploring the Hidden Leaf Village" 😅 so while the parts of the area looks open-world, being in the cutscene until the fighting segment doesn't count. Despite that, what I like from this segment/mode is the storytelling. God, I've never seen a story so well-crafted that Boruto and Hikari/Nanashi segment really makes my heart melt on the first time playing this game. This confirms my theory that Boruto isn't even entirely a bad person to begin with, even though in Two Blue Vortex manga, he became an outcast because of a false accusation that he's "the Hokage killer" (I have an unpublished meme mod regarding that subject on Project Wingman game where Crimson 1 is Boruto Uzumaki because people said that the anime/manga is bad, but I changed my overview after reading the TBV manga and the exclusive release of Frontline-59 campaign for consoles only). If you like flight arcade games with multiple weapons and unlimited time constraint, you should check it out below. My second playthrough of that segment with Bahasa Indonesia UI and English VO Actor is using the soundtracks from that game.

Conclusion

While I view it as the reskinned UNS4 game with improvements here and there, including support for languages native to your country (first time to have a Naruto game to be in Bahasa Indonesia, BTW), the game itself is not really bad to begin with. AI support is similar to UNS4, but they implemented a different system where support characters will only support you outside calling them to use Ninjutsu if you have the Storm Gauge filled up (pretty surprised that UJ Substitution will only work when it's full and not always when hit). Also, is it me or here in UNSC, the timer for the Storm Gauge to reset is shorter than that in UNS4? The only thing I don't like is how overpriced it is for the base game alone (Ultimate Edition costed similar to that in buying one of the DCS: World's modules like AV-8B N/A V/STOL). Ik for the fact that characters from Boruto series are included, in a hope that the SP story would replay the Boruto saga in a game, but yeah... what we got here is different. 😑
Not to mention, acquiring Ryo in this game isn't as generous as the one in UNS4. Again, new storyline mechanics that have no open-world scenarios. Can't blame 'em; this makes the game even more tedious than ever just for collecting stuffs like costume colors and decorations without even playing through the storyline.
If you aim for this game instead of UNS4, I recommend wait for the sale price. It's newbie-friendly, has full keyboard/mouse support (unlike UNS4 where keyboard bindings are used on a gamepad mapping, which makes people very confused if they don't have a gamepad), and the AI/fighting system seems to be as same as that in UNS4.
