Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution Review (Delirus)
Before starting, it's mandatory to say that this game, by itself, isn't that bad. If this was the first entry to the saga it would be really good, but as a fifth I'm not sure where they were going, specially with an already good and stable gameplay, at least in its basics.
And through that lens I would say - this is horrible. I'm actually suprised most reviews it has are positive.
First of all, I don't get the big changes they added.
The 4-man fights are abhorrent. Every time I play them, I ask myself if they tested it to see if they were actually enjoyable. Half the time you can't do much because you have three guys spamming everything on you, and when you can you may start praying you can land an entire combo before someone jumps on you. The orb mechanic makes it a bit more fun, but considering they implemented nothing decent to catch it, it's more infuriating than fun to have it there. The rail mechanic is just meh and the obstacles are barely relevant considering you are already jumping everywhere, but at least they bring some dynamic to the fights.
The good side is you have the Free Battle Mode, where you can fight 1v1 (as things should have stayed) and try and enjoy the amazing roster this game features, and that way you can ignore the previous mode for a while.
Second - the game basically has no story. It has tournaments that repeat the same cutscenes over and over again and here, to play the diverse cast, you need to go through some boring missions to get them to partner with you, which basically amounts to you running from one side of the map to the other, catching stuff or talking to people. The challenges and such are just normal fights that add nothing new to the rest of the game. The game features the Mecha Naruto's story, which is a good addition to the roster and has a decent ministory, and Ninja Escapades, that provides the player with some exclusive anime-content, but when you start enjoying it, it's already ending and you need to get back to whatever the rest of the game is.
Some small issues might be pointed out too.
Half the game is loading screens. Basically everything you try to access you need to wait for it to load.
For one of the achievements you need to get an S on exclusive content I mentioned, but if you end the fight and get an A you need to restart the arc because the game doesn't ask you if you want to retry, etc.
Considering how good Storm 1 and 2 are (the ones I played the most), this game can't be seen in a positive light.
4/10
