Mr. Sun's Hatbox Review (x-4000 (Chris McElligott-Park))

It's addictive and fun, but I can see why some folks don't like it all that much. But I think it's something that you can work around.
So the problem some folks have is that essentially, there is a lot of chaos going on. The longer you play, the worse it gets, in a given save file, especially if you keep getting more magic hats. It is possible to get the magic hats before you have really mastered the skills leading up to it, and if you do that, then you'll wind up losing like 80% of the missions you go on after a few hours, because you're just under-skilled for what is happening at that point.
If that happens to you, then I suggest just starting a fresh save slot. The progression the second time through lets you build the skills you were missing, during less-frenetic combat that you now have the actual chance to deal with. If you just keep playing on the existing save slot you are on, it gets only worse and worse in terms of how much is going on and how hard it is to tell what is going on.
The controls are tight, and the platforming and combat feels really good. However, it does take some time to master, and if you get too far into a specific run without having mastered the controls and the general mechanics, you're going to have a very bad time. Fortunately, the early part of the game is really fun, so starting a fresh save slot is not exactly a penalty.
